Free Music Review: ALL WE EVER WANTED
Hit: 5 Stars

http://blogs.nypost.com/popwrap/archives/2009/03/kelly_clarkson_all_i_ever_wanted.html

Kelly Clarkson's fourth studio album, "All I Ever Wanted," has thus far got mediocre reviews. Some say it is her worst yet and others praise it like a fat kid with a golden ticket. The one thing all those "others" have in common is that they are reviewing this album like it's some sort of audio masterpiece, forgetting that it's only claiming to be one thing ... pure pop.

Despite her very public miss with "My December," Clarkson did not hold back on "All I Ever Wanted." She moved full steam ahead with building a fierce, vibrant pop world that fits her like a funky vintage T. Kelly is one of the only "American Idol" alums that has the power for a comeback of this magnitude. With sprinkles of pop through the years, like "Since U Been Gone" and "Never Again," Kelly was bound to either get it right or give up trying.

We should look into changing that classic saying to "fourth times a charm." With potential hit singles hiding in every track, "All I Ever Wanted" covers classic issues we expect from Ms. Clarkson - low self esteem, betrayal, relationship regret - in a far more palatable "Kelly" way. Using a wide variety of pop ingredient's to make her points, this CD effortlessly bakes up into a beautiful cupcake of Clarkson delight.

"My Life Would Suck Without You" - Max Martin and Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald), two of the brains behind Kelly's previous album efforts are back, this time truly understanding Kelly's unique style. This No. 1 hit is a pure-pop dance anthem; sampling great emotions from timely divas like Cher and Donna Summer.

"I Do Not Hook Up" - New "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi teams up with Greg Wells and "I Kissed a Girl's" Katy Perry to cook-up one of my favorite tracks on the album. Even though I could do without anything Katy-related and feel Kara is better suited behind the scenes of the music industry, both lend large talents to this monster girl-power hit. Oh ... and maybe it's also time we gave our budding youth a song with lyrics like "I don't come cheap / Keep your hand / In my hand / And your heart / On your sleeve."

"Cry" - Kelly's "Idol" counterpart, Carrie Underwood, could have easily released this track as a monster single. The one thing it would have been missing was the untainted grit and realness that only Kelly brings it. Ms. Clarkson's voice is at its peak of perfection as she belts out notes that are so big they may not fit in your overhead compartment.

"Don't Let Me Stop You" - Whoaaa hoarsey! This song is so Faith Hill meets Paramore it's not even funny. Not one of my favorites, but still a good track-filler, "Don't Let Me Stop You" may have just birthed a new music genre called "Goth Country." Sharing four songwriters on one track, this is the perfect example of too many cooks in the kitchen. Thank God Kelly knows how to handle anything that comes her way.

"All I Ever Wanted" - This track is obviously in line to become one of this album's standout hits (most title tracks become singles.) Co-written by Sam Watters, who has worked with the likes of Whitney Houston, Anastacia and Jessica Simpson, it's a true gal-power anthem of emotion. I think if any of the for mentioned ladies would have recorded this, it wouldn't get gifted with the wings Kelly garnishes it with. The gritty guitars and hard bass line have just as much heart as Ms. Clarkson's vocals. And the bridge of this song is like a sticky jar of Elmer's Glue, joining the track together when it could have easily fallen apart a' la old school Clarkson.

"Already Gone" - The first of many collaborations between Kelly and long time friend Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic. This track is a mixture of old school Stevie Nicks and some Julia Roberts romantic comedy theme song, delivered together in true Clarkson fashion. Using one of her favorite words, "Gone," she spits emotion and heart into a song that makes me want to curl up in a blanket and long for someone ... while the credits roll.

"If I Can't Have You" - Another Ryan/Kelly collaboration, this track builds more and more with each listen. With hints of old-school U2 and Pat Benatar, this is one of those tunes that will timelessly live on any pop rock playlist for centuries. Not one of my favorites on the album -- with predictable lyrics and a chorus that repeats more than bad Thai food -- it still beats most of the trash artists use as "filler tracks."

"Save You" - Kelly's pal Ryan Tedder and new songwriter Aimee Proal scribbled this little gem to life, and darn, is it not one of my favorites. A ballad of sorts, this is one of those concert track where the artist usually brings out a bar stool and a guitar and spouts off some sort of "Natalie Manes" political comment.

"Whyyawannabringmedo wn" - The words of this title run together just as strangely as the vocals on this track, in a good way. It's a newer sound for Kelly, but she seems comfortable doing it. With perfectly layered vocals and a guitar line that could register a 3.0 on the Richter scale, this track lives on its spectrum. Kelly seems comfortable, raw and as familiar as a vocalist can be on a single ... me likey.

"Long Shot" - This is Katy Perry's other writing cameo, and a song that sits nicely between two great singles, and will probably not see much -- if any-- radio play. The sad thing is, Kelly finds a warm habitat of harmonious brilliance in this song. With a slow build, a powerful chorus and one of my favorite bridges (which some of her songs completely dismiss,) this power ballad is one of my faves.

"Impossible" - The third of Kelly and OneRepublic front man Ryan team-ups, this superhero sounding track may be lacking a cape and a face mask, but should be snagged up by Marvel or DC Comics if they know what's good for them. I would pay 15 bucks more than once to see Hugh Jackman claw at tons of baddies while Kelly belts out lyrics like "no need to dry my eyes / haven't cried in quite some time." That's sooo "Wolverine."

"Ready" - Texan Aben Eubanks teamed up with Kelly and Jason Halbert to form one of my favorite songs on this new CD. Aben and Kelly worked together on other hits like "Sober" and "Maybe," and now bring us this summer-convertible-top-down-driving-along-the-countryside tune. It's a mid-temp trip into a world that Kelly is just now opening up for the rest of the world to see.

"I Want You" - Kelly Clarkson & Joakim Åhlund (one of Robyn's production pals) create a classic '40s gal group inspired pool song. It makes me thirsty and in dire need of some SPF20. Kelly brings a new sass I haven't heard from her on this one, consider this the beginning of her sex-goddess era.

"If No One Will Listen" - Singer-songwriter Keri Noble lends her pen to a beautiful ballad that features Kelly's voice as it's main instrument. Lyrics like "If no one's left standing after the bombs explode / If no one wants to look at you / For what you really are / I will be here still" build a song that is going to get a thank you card from Kleenex in the near future.
