When I reviewed "Sky Like A Broken Clock" I concluded that Kelly Joe Phelps story telling and slide guitar work were outstanding although the CD was very low keyed and somber. On this EP we get the additional material that, for one reason or another, did not make the CD's final cut. Like extra footage released later on a Director's cut DVD, these songs add an added dimension to the original release and definetly would have picked up my enthusiasm for the "Sky" CD had they have been included. Nevertheless, we are now provided with a limited opportunity to pick up the tracks previously left behind, and what excellent tracks they are. While track 1, "Beggar's Oil" comes right off the CD, there are 5 previously unreleased tunes, two of those "Tommy" and the track 5 "Beggar's Oil" are essentially alternative takes of what is included on the "Sky" CD. While all tracks are very good, "Frankenstein Party Of Three..." is not to be missed.

I've been a KJP fan since I first heard a CD of his after a kindly older gentleman at a local guitar shop heard me playing lap slide and suggested (quite forcefully!) that I buy everything he 's released. He set me on what I believe will be a lifelong journey appreciating the nuances of all that is Kelly joe.

This album is a rarity. It is a pleasant change from his past releases in that it releases some of his remarkable improvisational style on a CD (as those of you who have seen him perform live will attest, he never plays the same version twice) and doesn't stop to take a breath. The band version of Beggar's Oil (a song I've been practicing non-stop since I first heard it) borders on funky and Don Quixote's Windmill is my new favorite tune. If I Prove False to Thee (or, The Lass of Loch Royale, if you prefer) is a song he's played live at most of his recent performances and, apart from a less-than-perfect sound quality, is mesmerizing in its simple beauty.

Of course, there is little that can dissuade me from loving everything this man has produced so my opinion may be somewhat biased, but this EP makes up for the fact that he released a non-lap-slide CD a few long months ago. Whatever he plays is gold and you can rest assured that this is a perfect nightcap to Sky Like A Broken Clock.

Buy this immediately - you will NOT be disappointed.
