Free Music Review: She Got That 'Hubba Bubba'

Kelly Rowland will always be known for making up 1/3 of Destiny's Child. She released her first solo CD: `Simply Deep' in 2002 which felt rushed and did not seem like it had her heart in it. There were maybe about 3-4 songs on it that were "believable" and noteworthy. Kelly did not really succeed in separating herself much from DC3. On her sophomore effort: `Ms. Kelly', she bumps it up about 10 notches and turns up the heat.
Kelly has always had a great, clean and crisp voice and knows how to use it without having to resort to yelling and screaming and tons of "ooohs" and "aahhs". Out of the 12 tracks on this set Kelly co-wrote 9 of them and what a great writer. These are songs with substance, meaning, sex appeal and catchy hooks and melodies.
On `Simply Deep' is just seemed to me to be a mish mash of genres all thrown onto one record: R&B, pop, pop/rock etc....On `Ms. Kelly' it seems a lot more focused on the genre Kelly was meant to sing - R&B. There is something on here for everyone: you've got the Hip Hop/club bangers: "Like This" (With Eve), "Comeback", "Ghetto" (with Snoop) and "Work". The more mid-tempo jams: "Flashback", "Every Thought Is You", "The Show" (With Tank), "Still In Love With My Ex" to the beautiful R&B ballads: "Love", "Better Without You" and "This Is Love". There is not one song on this list that I skip over. There are all great. There are some that really standout and grab you - the songs to really look out for are:
"Like This" - y'all know this one!
"Comeback" - the JAM!
"Work" - Another club jam!
"Still In Love With My Ex" - One of my favorites on this CD
"Better Without You" - My favorite slower song on the CD
This CD is a must for any Kelly and/or R&B fan. She really sets herself apart from the other R&B singers that are out there today and most importantly takes quite a few steps away from the image of Destiny's Child. A+

With that kind of underdog love, Kelly could have coasted in her solo career, cranking out batches of classy ballads and midtempo joints designed mostly to keep the faithful convinced they were right. Ms. Kelly, though, has some points to prove, foremost among them that this songbird can rock: "I told y'all I was gonna bump like thee-es," she boasts alongside Eve on the red-hot banger of a first single that is "Like This." Later, she sidles up to Snoop Dogg in the slinkiest way possible on "Ghetto," busts out the funk on "Work," and scissor-kicks expectations about the limits of her clean voice on "Comeback." As the disc rolls on, Rowland's friskiness mellows--"The Show," with Tank, puts the focus on the near-forgotten art of harmonizing and "Still in Love with My Ex" makes a sweet study of romantic regret. The closing track, a ballad a country crooner could have had a good time with, nevertheless gets to the bottom of why this disc is so worth shelling out for: The love Rowland sings about on "This Is Love" is "like a diamond in the sand"; so, we come to realize, is she. --Tammy La Gorce
