Free Music Review: Simply Deeper

Well, after having this CD for a year I can now appreciate Kelly's sophomore album for what it's worth. The quality and the craftsmanship are there however; it just lacks the proper promotion which is fine in my book. Everyone is not meant for mainstream status and I have learned that some of the best albums are not billboard chart toppers. I have followed Kelly's career very closely for the last 10 years and watch her go from Beyonce backup to her own woman. While Kelly's debut solo album Simple deep was not deep enough, Miss Kelly is a much better attempt.

This album was okay, not what I had hoped. The songs are ones I'd find on any other R&B singer's album, such as Brandy's, Monica's & Amerie's. I appreciated Kelly most at the time when she released "Stole", which was something no R&B singer had released at the time, and it made her stand out, also with a positive message. I think the cd deserves way more credit than it is getting.The CD does take a few listens, but then you will see that she has some really good tracks that can be placed on repeat. Like This...Im over it! This is Love...Im gonna walk down the aisle to this one day!!! Still in love with my ex.... LOVE IT!!! I cant relate directly, but can understand how someone could feel like that!!! Ghetto...GARBAGE!! Love... Good listen and very relateable!!! Work...OK! Kelly & Michelle have always been back-up to Beyonce. I don't own Kelly's first CD so I can't say how much growth she has shown or the difference between the two. But I bought this album the day it came out & at first I was thinking "She better be glad I got this on sale even though it wasn't even worth the $10!" This album was pushed back once or twice because of course the spotlight & focus was being given to Ms. B & her birthday CD. So I thought at least they would've improved Kelly's album during the setbacks. It takes some getting used to. At first I did not like the album & thought it was mediocore. I was thinking "I bet B would've have put this out there sounding like this!" LOL. But after listening to the CD a few more times Ms. Kelly grew on me. There were a couple that I like right off the bat, a couple that grew on me, a couple that I can take or leave, and a couple that I can skip altogether.
1. Like This
Of course this is a banging opening track. She's telling everyone who always thought of her as just being B's back-up that we didn't know she could bump like this!
2. Comeback
Haha, liked this one right off the bat! Kelly said she got them boys coming back...and it's not cause of her cooking.
3. Ghetto
Yeah, I skip this one altogether. Not a Snoop fan. The song was too slow-moving too.
4. Work
Now this sounded like B to me! Tight track, liked this one immediately.
5. Flashback
Nice sound. Slow song.
6. Every Thought Is You
Decent track.
7. The Show
Nothing like a good-sounding man to make a song good.
8. Interlude
9. Still In Love With My Ex
I couldn't figure out if she was talking about Roy or if she realized she was still in love with her ex & that's why she couldn't stay with Roy. Nice sound to it. Honest.
10. Love
Like this one. About a boy who dogged her out & now he's calling.
11. Better Without You
Really good sound. Shows her growth and realization that she doesn't need him.
12. This Is Love
Slooow moving. Honest sound. I skip this one too.
It's worth a listen. On sale.

I loved this whole entire album. I wish people would stop comparing her to Beyonce because she is her own person with her own style. She deserves a lot more credit than she is given, and this album proved it.
