Free Music Review: Kendra Ross "Jumps at the Sun" With Her Debut Release New Voice

One of my favorite passages from Zora Neale Hurston is, "Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place." I think this resonates particularly true to Kendra Ross because I can feel love in every note on her debut release, New Voice. Ironically, Kendra does not have a new voice at all, or should I say, "ain't nuthin' new about Kendra's voice" (I had to do it). Vocally, I detect soulful cues from the likes of Shirley Brown, Ruth Pointer, and even the great Phyllis Hyman. I did however, find Kendra's spin on life, love and the human condition refreshing in a way that I had not expected from a freshman release. I was even more astonished to find that the person lived up to the music that I had become so fond of.
Like her greatest influences Katherine Dunham and Zora Neale Hurston, Kendra has paved a way for herself where none yet existed. A renaissance woman in her own right, she has managed to balance her spirituality, education, corporate aspirations and an astounding knack for penning lyrics that seem to penetrate to the core of your emotion. Clearly Kendra is too much to for anthropology, too much for the music industry and way too much for the corporate rat race. While these external demands do exist in her life, she has managed to channel all of them into a compilation that took my breath away.
Lola's child has made mom proud in more ways than than she could have ever imagined by honing her live performances to become cleverly designed theatrical spectacles; all-the-while seeking an introspect that has made Kendra an even better person. After our conversation, I can not surmise even one scenario where this woman does not attain all the goals that, I know, exist in the far reaching crevices of her imagination. In my mind, I do not see a singer bound for greatness, I see a person that achieves greatness every time her music profoundly touches another soul. Conjuring a "hiding place" that could dampen the radiance of this woman's indomitable spirit is unthinkable. Kendra's "New Voice" can be described in another of Zora's greatest quotes, "Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to 'jump at the sun.' We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground." Lola's child has certainly taken a giant leap towards the sun with "New Voice" but I can not see her falling back to earth for quite some time to come.
