Free Music Notes for 42 Ultimate Hits

Free Music Review: Great Collection
Hit: 4 Stars

This two disc set is a great collection and doesn't overwhelm like the boxed set does. All of Kenny's huge hits are here, every collection lacks a song or two for every person interested in hits collections and I'm no exception. I really wish the duet performed with Gladys Knight "If I Knew Then What I Know Now" was here. It was a huge hit and oddly enough was overlooked by the producer of the boxed set. Now, let's talk mastering. Wow, is this set turned down. Kenny had a small hits package with Warner Brothers called "Decade" and that collection was superb in it's overall mastering. Capital has been releasing a myriad of hits collections by other artists and the sound levels are nowhere near as muted as this set. The off-label songs like "Buy Me A Rose" have been turned down to fit with the rest of this album. To me, hits collections are a testament to a sucessful career and should be regarded as great works and need to be presented in the best sound possible. Other than this small complaint, 42 hits is a damn fine project.

Free Music Review: Nostalgic
Hit: 4 Stars

I spent a small portion of my childhood living in a suburb of Cairo, Egypt. My family had five audio tapes to listen to, one of which was Kenny Rogers' 20 Greatest Hits. Needless to say, I became quite fond of those songs. Even now, although I disdain country music, prefereing more indie and electronic pop, I will stop and listento Kenny Rogers. This is an excellent collection of the songs I loved as a child and a good introduction to the songs I didn't know at the time and the ones produced since. Everytime I hear "The Gambler", "Lucille", or "Coward of the County", I am taken back to a time when I didn't have a care in the world, where political and economic strife were not issues to me, when I had friends and neighbors or all races and nationalities. The music of this collection take me back. Listen to this collection; it will remind you of the world you though lost forever.

Free Music Review: His best collection yet.
Hit: 4 Stars

"Kenny Rogers" has almost as many collections out as he does hits, but this is in fact his "42 Ultimate Hits". Two discs loaded with more classic country than most artists will ever have. So many hits here, including "Lucille", "Lady", "Coward Of The County", "She Believes In Me", and the classic "The Gambler". Plus numerous duets with "Dottie West", "Kim Carnes", "Sheena Easton", and "Dolly Parton". In short, this is a must for the classic country, or "Kenny Rogers" fan.

Free Music Review: Excellent collection, but NOT all the hits...
Hit: 4 Stars

While this is easily the best collection of Kenny's hits for casual fans who don't need the box set, it is missing "What About Me", his duet with Kim Carnes and James Ingram, as well as "This Woman". Both of those songs made the Billboard pop top 40 chart and should definitely have been included in this compilation. It's still worth purchasing, but it is a shame that Capitol didn't include ALL the hits.

Free Music Review: Great memories and more...
Hit: 4 Stars

If you are a Kenny Rogers fan, this one won't disappoint. All his most popular hits and some great duets, everything you're looking for. The only downside (if there is one) is there were a few songs squeezed in that would probably not be considered among his greatest hits, but are still good music to listen to.
