Free Music Notes for 10 Days Out (Blues from the Backroads)/ (CD/DVD)Free Music Review: Magnificent Hit: 5 Stars
A few weeks ago, I walked into the music department at my local media store, and heard a classic, driving blues number playing. I instantly asked, "Who IS this?" and the clerk held up 10 Days Out, a CD / DVD combo by Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I did not know Mr. Shepherd, and the price tag was a bit daunting, but I made a mental note anyway.
A few days later, I walked into the same store, and heard a great version of a blues song I know well, The Thrill Is Gone, and again, I instantly asked, "Who IS this?" Much to my surprise, the clerk again held up this CD / DVD combo, and I knew immediately that I had to get it.
Upon further perusal, I realized that there were some very good reasons why it caught my attention. Two of them are guest artists B. B. King and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, two of the most respected blues artists in the genre. Since taking it home, I have discovered there are at least a half-dozen more good reasons for liking it, all in the form of the many special guest stars who show us what the blues are all about.
Despite a lukewarm review by Rolling Stone (and their website is ablaze with fans complaining that the reviewer for R. S. missed the boat on this one) I have to say it's one of the more accessible and enjoyable blues jams I've yet acquired, and that's saying a lot. Picking a favorite track is hard out of so many gems (and how better to know when you've purchased a great piece of music; so much of today's "product" - in almost any musical category - offers a single listenable track, or hit, and even that is usually overrated) but I have a sentimental weakness for the old tune, Sitting On Top of the World, which has been recorded by countless artists in the blues, jazz, country, western swing, bluegrass and folk canons - how's THAT for a roots perennial?
If you know nothing about blues but have always been curious, especially if you have a penchant for R & B or rock and roll, and want to explore their true roots, this album may just open up a whole new world for you. And if it doesn't, it's still a great piece of music.
Since receiving it in the mail three days ago, I haven't been able to get the CD off my stereo long enough to check out the DVD portion, but user reviews I've read say that's the best part. Hard to fathom, but I'm sure looking forward to it.
Free Music Review: Where the Blues comes from Hit: 5 Stars
This CD/DVD combo is a stunner. Wow. Difficult to know where to begin in listing all the interesting features of this body of work. I do have a question though: why limit yourself to 10 days and have to run so hard to capture what's here? It cost them something when they didn't have an audio problem figured out when they were recording (or so they thought) B.B. King in a little club in Indianola, Mississippi. When you see and hear what they DID get recorded, you'll be in anguish over whatever it is they missed.
I bought this on a recommendation from a friend when we were talking the value, the worth, and the quality of Blues as played by the musicians who made it famous. Personally I don't have much background on Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Prior to this, I always thought he was a 'pretty boy' playing pretty much hard edged electric whiteguy Blues. On these discs, he's playing sideman to some of the real bluesmen left alive. He's very courteous and respectful in his approach to sitting in with these guys, he being the student to the master, and that was nice to see. The fact that he can flat play also helped a lot. ;--)
The first thing that will get you is the rhythms. Man, there's nothing out there like what you'll hear these guys (Double Trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan's band) crank out! The ability to grab you comes from the simplicity of the approach. In many cases, the PLAYING is anything but simple, but you can't miss the message. Not a lot of energy is lost in making a show here. It's all in the music and it's carrying a message we all hear, black or white or any color for that matter. There is definitely a conversation here between you, the listener and viewer, and these players.
The Blues... when it's played right as it is here, to me, it's simply the best out there. Pick this one up... and try a little musical meat down close to the bone. In my world, this one's gonna be in Heavy Rotation for quite awhile...
Free Music Review: Amazing project. Enjoyable results! Hit: 5 Stars
The ARTISTS in this recording and film project by Kenny and Jerry Harrison(talking heads) make this project what it is. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a young and amazing guitar player who has a good head on his shoulders musically. But it is the "old-timers" who put the stamp on this one. It is all about them, and that is the beauty of this release. Kenny, respectfully lets them have their own run. He plays with them, but doesn't try to compete or overshadow them. Respectfully and tastefully done.
To fully get the overall beauty and majesty of this project, I recommend watching the DVD first. It tells the whole story of the project with plenty of conversations with these Blues players who have never stopped playing the Blues. To them its statement is ever present and not forgotten. By watching this truly captivating film(which is truly one of the best documentaries I have ever viewed)it will help you to truly appreciate these songs again and again.
"Potato Patch", "Spoonful George" &"Tina Marie" are standouts, but only slightly edge over the others. Trust me the entire disc selection is amazing and wonderfully done.
All in all, this is one to have and treasure. It is a tasteful, respectful and well done homage to the players performing on this project. I have gained a new respect for all these players through their advice and stories, but also for Kenny Wayne Shepherd. HATS OFF TO ALL INVOLVED ON THIS PROJECT. Music Review: kenny wayne does it again Hit: 5 Stars
I first saw kenny back in in '97 at st. andrews hall in detroit. when he came out he just blew everyone away. at that time, even though he was just starting out, you would think he was at the top of his game. solo after solo were blistered at you. no let up & you could feel the passion he had for the blues.
well, he has top that time period by putting out 10 days out. I had no clue of what this package would contain or the thought & energy & time it would take to put together is amazing. most cd/dvd sets are just put out for the cash. this one is put out for the love of the music & the artist of pass, present & future (kenny). he goes place to place finding some of the blues greatest players & talking to them about their experinces & actually jamming with them on stage. the dvd is alone 106 mins. long. plus they have videos you can watch to. jerry harrison (talking heads) is the man that helps put this together with kenny to bring the love of the blues music back & pay tribute to it. the booklet is fantastic. if we only could have this in lp size, that would be the icing on the cake.
the only thing to worry about is that if you're looking for a all out balls playing like kenny does on his cds you won't find it here. there is some but he is paying tribute to the men who started the blues.
thank god for the blind, we probably wouldn't have kenny wayne sheperd.
Free Music Review: An absolute MUST for blues fans!!! And a great introduction to this terrific music for the others Hit: 5 Stars
What I knew of Kenny Wayne Shepherd prior to this wasn't exactly to my taste. It was good - no doubt about that. He is great guitar player. But his music was a bit too tough, too electric for my taste.
As I never give up on good musicians, I looked and listened into this one - man, was I blown away!!!!
The concept is quite simple, Kenny Wayne together with his friends Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon (of Double Trouble) visits the players he loves and adores and joins them to create this country blues jam-fest. It's improvised, just taped the way it was, but that's what makes it so special.
Watching and listening to him play together with Etta Baker in her kitchen, or with Buddy Flett in a graveyard as a tribute to the late and great Leadbelly. With Cootie Stark performing U-Haul. Waiting for BB in his own hometown - ooooh these solos just hit me! WOOW!
No matter which track you pick, there's so much love for the music jumping off the disc - amazing.
And even for non-blues fans, this is something to watch. The fun these terrific musicians have playing together, sharing their craft and the joy will jump over to you, who knows, maybe in the end even turning you into yet another blues fan like me.
It comes as a two disc set. The dvd is my favorite, but sometimes when you just want to listen to the music, then you pick the cd.
