Shepherd is reminiscent of the great Stevie Ray Vaughan, and therefore makes Stevie's fans yearn for the real deal. This makes a review by a confirmed SRV fan somewhat suspect and potentially unfair to Kenny Wayne, who is an accomplished blues guitarist - just not in Vaughan's class.Free Music Review: ledbetter heights

The two opening cuts are great! Deja Voodoo sold me on this album it's self. Kenny was a lot younger at this time, and you can tell he was still trying to find his identity as a picker (he found it on the Live On album IMO).
Some have criticized him for ripping off Pearl Jam, and I'll be honest...I think While We Cry is definitely derived from Pearl jam's "Yellow Ledbetter." But...neither Gossard nor McCready could play what Shepherd played on this tune. I agree that Shepherd shouldn't have taken credit for this song as being his own, but he smokes on this tune more than Pearl Jam could ever hope to. At the end of the day, I don't think KWS will ever be remembered for this tune anyway, as most people know him for Blue On Black, but by all means...Live On is an exceptional album that needs to be heard by anyone who knows about Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
This album is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone who likes guitar driven blues.

Okay everyone before you go slamming someone for making changes in their style and sound I suggest that you strap on a guitar yourself and try playing the same thing over and over and over again and try to remain enthusiastic about it..
I'll admit that this recording is quite a departure from Kens previous stylings.. Some songs sound to me a bit like Lenny Kravitz, some almost sound to me a bit like Cry of Love meets Brother Cane ... But they're only comparisons.. These songs are still Kenny Wayne and I am humbled by his ability and facility with his instrument.(Makes me almost want to put mine down and not pick it up again...)
Jimi Hendrix lamented the same feelings back in the 60's when he wanted to move on stylistically but everyone was still screaming for him to play Hey Joe or whatever.
Just like eating waffles everyday for breakfast....It can get old.. We ALL need change once in a while.Why should our modern day minstrels be any different.. I'd say don't give up on Ken just yet..
I remember giving Living Colour (remember them?) two second chances because I dug their first disc so much. But Vernon Reid's stylistic change just lost me..Too avant garde I guess..
Ken I give you credit for singing on your own songs. You can pull it off.. There are others who,in my opinion,absolutely should NOT be singing on their songs but shall remain nameless because this is just my opinion..
I suppose this isn't so much a review of Kens music as it is me going to bat for him ( not that he needs me to or would even want me to)and anyone else that has the courage to try change...Just wanted to throw in my $.02 worth I guess. I see WAY too many reviews on this site that spew forth nothing but shallow narrow minded negativity...
I doubt that this review will be very helpful to too many people in influencing them whether or not to buy this cd.But if it helps maybe to change someones thought process regarding unneccesary negative ranting then my mission has been accomplished...
