Free Music Review: Strap In ... Press Play ... Hang On
Hit: 5 Stars

After reading several other user reviews I've come to the conclusion that this album is another in a long, long line of examples of "damned if you do and damned if you don't". Blues purists are weeping and gnashing their teeth over The Place You're In. Noah Hunt fans are forming a torchlit mob. And everywhere you can hear the unspoken "sellout" epithet. For all of those -- and the rest who've taken umbrage at the latest offering from Austin's Boy Wonder I have one thing to say.

Get over it.

From time immemorial artists who steadfastly refused to evolve have lost their audiences to artists who could appeal to the fickle tastes of the music buying public. And artists who DID evolve and grow became the "sellout crowd" who turned their backs on the faithful in pursuit of the almighty dollar.

All of which begs the question "If you LIKE the album, does it matter if it's the same old same old, or something new?" Or for that matter if you DON'T like it, the same question applies. No matter what direction an artist takes, there will be detractors. I'm just suprised to find so many that are so universally opposed to The Place You're In.

Yes, this is a departure from the previous three KWS albums. That could be expected since there was, after all, a 5-year haitus after 1999's Live On. This album might actually be considered a "Second Debut". Viewed in that light, it's an exceptional piece. Flavored with reminisces of Alice in Chains, Lynyrd Skynrd, Deep Purple, Lenny Kravitz, and even Little Feat The Place You're in is easily the heaviest of any of Kenny's albums to date. We're drawn in by the melodic intro of "Alive" and then promptly blasted back into our seats as the intro gives way to a Phil Spector-ish "wall of sound". The Hallmark people are having coronaries after listening to the sentimentally-titled "Be Mine", which is anything but the saccharine love ballad they were expecting. "Spank", even for a not-so-much-of-a Kid Rock fan is a fun song. But the best part about "Spank" is that it's followed by my personal favorite "Let Go" which reels you in with a haunting melody layered with possibly the best vocal harmonies on the album. And speaking of vocals, the two tracks that feature Noah Hunt ("Believe" and "Burdens") will appeal to even the bitterest of purists. These two songs come closest to the Kenny Wayne Shepherd we're accustomed to.

If this had actually BEEN a debut album, critics everywhere would be hailing it as brilliant. Since it's NOT a debut, it falls victim to comparison to its predecessors. Taken strictly on its own merit this is a tasty buffet of rock and roll. Viewed as a member of the KWS discography, it suffers somewhat by not being uniquely identifiable as Kenny's work.

But if this is truly a "second debut", and Kenny follows the same pattern as he did on his first three releases, I can't wait to hear what comes next.

The Place You're In Poster

The Place You're In, Kenny Wayne Shepherd's long-awaited fourth album, marks a stunning stylistic shift for an artist who almost single-handedly introduced blues-rock to a new audience. One of the most acclaimed guitarists of his generation not only leans more heavily toward rock, but also releases his first album featuring his vocals. Says Shepherd, whose first three albums went gold or platinum and who has earned seven Top 10 Mainstream Rock cuts and three Grammy® nominations: "We're all growing and changing....We might as well get behind it and enjoy the ride." And enjoy The Place You're In.
