Sometimes, an artist comes along that cannot be placed into a specific genre. keri hilson is such an artist. Madam Hilson combines glam, pop, hip hop, hipster bling and feminism into the perfect package. Her debut album tackles love, life, money, and everything in between. And unlike many other untalented lepers, Keri writes nearly every song on the album. And she has class. But you've heard her song writing talent before. After all, she wrote gimme more, the song that saved britneys career. keri has also worked with...user. ruben studdard. ciara. chris brown. mary j blige. pussycat dolls. asher roth. nas...and many others.
the first single was the epic energy. perfect for a nice workout, this song concerns a young woman who is trapped in a bad relationship. the soaring anthem chronicles the end of a downward spiral, and the beginning of a new life. Keri is trapped in a possibly abusive relationship, and during the song she becomes strong enough to admit it. Keri sings out about how this love is taking all of her energy, and that it's killing her and it's taking all of her. she is no longer in denial. the beauty and power of this realization is demonstrated in the pounding, bumping synth...which soars during the chorus. the story remains unfinished, but at least we know that she has come to terms with what the problem is. She is finding the strength within herself to move on, and that is why the song is so optimistic and inspiring.
the first big hit from the album was turn on, which features the always unusual lil wayne. this feminist anthem takes place after keri has dumped the bum from energy, and with renewed confidence, is out looking for a hot daddy at the club. keri gets her pick of all the hot fellas, but if you get caught feeling on her booty...its a red light. Because you have turned her off! Other highlights include return the favor...which is a hip and hot back and forth between keri hilson and timbaland. think the way i are, but a bit more blatantly sexualized and taking place in a gay dance club.
on a sad note, keri did not include the song quicksand on most releases of the album. this song is sexy, minimalist, slinky, experimental and utterly seductive. keri sings like an utter succubus. but of course while she is a bit of a tease, the lyrics demonstrate that her love will heal you...that when you bring the pain she will bring the heat....her love will be your remedy. one listen and you'll agree...so why not have it on the album? But beyond that...excellent start to what will be a strong career.
Beyonce and Ciara...Keri is coming for ya.
