Free Music Review: The music is the thing in one of the best duos ever

I've been making an effort to do a review every day or so, to sort of give back to the great amazon review community. I like music ALOT. I've spent more money than I care to even imagine, but I have vinyl and CDs galore, and like a lot of us remember when music wasn't basically free. There's lot that can be said about the industry, but my point is just to say I spent a good portion of my "discretionary" (meaning before kids) income on music. Concerts at Ella Guru's, travelling to see bands that I knew would never come close to my home town, and buying CDs. In the 80s I got into what I call Trad music, specifically Irish Trad (short for traditional), through bands like Altan, Capercaille, the Chieftans and eventually for me Planxty, the Bothy Band and all the after groups, super groups, and remnants. For me bands like Altan and Planxty have a kind of energy that is hard to describe, I think it betters the energy of punk, but perhaps is even similar. It's more than cultural, but there is some of that, more than the quasi-politcal-ness of certain groups and people, ala Andy Irvine, more than history, that Energy comes out of all that and the traditions-- which come from the people.
But underneath all of it is a music that's been handed down. One can get the sheet music for many of these songs due to the efforts of people Like O'Neill, Cobb, Keegan and others. It's like a language, you can't fully appreciate till you speak it and read it.
All of this is to say that with the work of Kevin Burke & Micheal O'Domhnaill, it's the music that comes to the front-- there's no rollicking energy like in Planxty, but to me an energy more inherent in each tune, they seem deeply personal. Almost as if each song and tune is being played and sung TO YOU by SOMEONE YOU KNOW. I'm struggling here to put what I mean in words, but it's the best I can do. I love people, but I like most hanging out with one or two friends, in good gab and closeness whether in a snug in a pub, or hiking a trail. The music of Promenade is more like that closeness than the lively fun of a party with more friends. I give it four stars merely because I like this record less than Portland, both if which are pretty much must have as far as I am concerned. This one probably deserves 5 stars, too. If you like Celtic or Traditional Irish, give these a listen, and give them some time and careful attention and you will be well rewarded.
