Free Music Review: Kevin Spacey puts his all into this soundtrack for the movie!
Hit: 5 Stars

Actor Kevin Spacey whom co-wrote, co-produced, and directed this biopic on the life of an well known and almost unsung hero in the world of music history named Bobby Darin, unlike Jamie Foxx's thing on Ray Charles in the movie RAY, stars in this tell-art story of this true cat that had a success in the industry from acting, playing, singing, writing. This brother had something on his sleeves and today considered a one of a kind. Watching the movie and listening to the soundtrack altogether had real magic all on its own with no mess. If you into the likes of Big Bands and the love of jazz crooners of Sinatra, Nat Cole, Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, or Marvin Gaye (during his time in Motown), both the soundtrack and movie will suit your soul.

Can't say much on the music per se but specially Mack the Knife and Dream Lover are real classics stand to this day. Great live instrumentation from the orchestra plus neat job on Kevin Spacey and some of the other actors doing their singing.

On Bobby Darin, he had a real style all of his own. He was an actor, musician, arranger and singer. Yeah, he can play drums, guitar, piano, vibes, percussion and can be a heckuva arranger for ideas. And most known for his finger snapping.

Give this soundtrack and the film a real taste!

Free Music Review: Spacey swings
Hit: 5 Stars

For the person who gave this soundtrack one star and says that Kevin Spacey isn't on the same level of artistry as Bobby Darin, I just want to say that Spacey would be the first to agree with your statement. I had the pleasure of attending his Boston concert as part of his tour to promote the film, and he plugged Darin several times throughout the evening and stated that in no way, shape, or form did he want people to believe that he thought he was Bobby Darin up there on stage. He said that no one could ever come close. But what better way to promote Darin's legacy and draw interest for this film then to do a singing tour?

Having said that, I still think that Spacey has a magnificent voice. No, he is not *quite* as good as Darin was and admits that he lacks Darin's range, but I still feel that he tried his best at bringing some of Darin's chutzpah to these tracks. In particular he comes close on "Some of These Days" and his naturally gentle tones are well-suited and a near-match for Darin's on the folk songs, including the charming "Change", "If I Were A Carpenter", and "Simple Song of Freedom."

Besides, he brought the house down for 900 people at the concert I attended. What further proof do you need?

Free Music Review: Couldn't Get Spacey Out of My Head
Hit: 5 Stars

Being a new Darin fan, thanks in part to Kevin Spacey and his little film, I couldn't justify my first foray into his work being an album of his songs being sung by someone else. If this is your first introduction as well, I would suggest going the same route and checking out Darin himself first.
So, I bought a Darin cd, "The Legendary Bobby Darin", and have fallen in LOVE with it and Darin. I can listen to the live version of "Beyond the Sea" on the album for days on end. That said I still couldn't get Spacey versions from the film out of my head. After listening to Darin, I really hoped that I wouldn't be disappointed by Spacey and what I remembered from the film.
No worries, Spacey ROCKS!! Not to say that Spacey could ever "pass" for Darin, no one could. As an actor his job was to portray Darin and his voice as best he possibly could and IMO he did a very good job. Spacey is a smart man and I'm sure he would also agree that no one could ever genuinely "pass" for Darin. Heck, Kevin Spacey would probably tell you to go out and buy a Bobby Darin album instead of the soundtrack to his movie.
There is certainly room for both Bobby and Kevin in my music collection and I hope we hear more from Spacey.

Free Music Review: No it's not Bobby Darin, but it's great music!
Hit: 5 Stars

I saw "Beyond The Sea" the other day. The movie I thought was ok, it was done a little weird as far as bio-pics go, but what really hit me was the music, which in the end is what the movie was all about anyway. I suppose I am in the majority of people of a certain ago group who really only know Bobby Darin thru "Splish Splash" and "Mack The Knife" and not much else. After seeing the movie though I am willing to dig a little deeper into his catalog. I wanted to start with this soundtrack though. Kevin Spacey sings all the songs on here and does a VERY good job at it. I thought of getting a Darin hits CD, but I specifically wanted the versions of the songs as done in the movie. I suppose also if I was at all familiar with the orginal Bobby Darin tracks I might see that his are superior and I'm sure they are, but if what you want is the music as done in the movie, here it is. If you want the real thing, search out the real thing. As far as this CD goes, it's just great music regardless of who is singing it. Kevin Spacey does a very strong vocal impression of Bobby Darin and the music on here was taken from Darin's original arrangements. Just great music!!!
