Free Music Notes for Beyond the SeaFree Music Review: The incomparable Spacey Hit: 5 Stars
After his unequivocally mesmerizing performance in Beyond the Sea, I was completely unaware that this absolutely singular soundtrack was available for public consumption. Suffice to say, I was in for a treat - a treat unlike any other I have enjoyed in movie soundtrack listening in some time.
Why was The Curtain Falls not made the fitting closing on the soundtrack as in the film? Who knows...but then again, who cares? This soundtrack is that good that the order is immaterial. With such extraordinarily sublime tracks as Artificial Flowers, Mack the Knife, Beyond the Sea, Hello Young Lovers, Dream Lover, Simple Song of Freedom, and Fabulous Places(my favorite), how can one go wrong? Kudos to Spacey on his painstaking devotion to making this soundtrack so incredibly enjoyable - not merely a disingenuous Darin cover, and conversely yet not anything resembling an unimaginitive hackneyed Darin clone either. Good stuff.
Free Music Review: Magic Time Hit: 5 Stars
"Beyond the Sea" is one of the best albums I have heard in a long while. Mr. Spacey proves he is a singer to be reckoned with. He has what the greatest singers of popular music have possessed: talent, timing, phrasing, and belief in the material. Kevin Spacey has the ability of capitivating his audience during this intimate listening experience. He injects the essence of Bobby Darin into his reading of the lyric, but he is very much present in these tracks and it is evident that he loves what he is doing! The arrangements sparkle; the sound quality is marvelous; the musicians are the best I've heard in years. Phil Ramone...bless you for carrying the torch. The liner notes are awesome. From "Beyond the Sea" to "Simple Song of Freedom," you will not be disappointed. This album is not only cinematic; it's theatrical. In fact, you may file "Beyond the Sea" between your favorite Darin, Nat Cole, and Sinatra albums. Enjoy.
Free Music Review: Unbelievable!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, this movie was incredible! I went out and bought this CD the next day.
Kevin Spacey does such an incredible job of portraying Bobby Darin!! If you didn't know already, it would be tough to tell who's Bobby and who's Kevin! From the inflections in his voice to the tone of the songs, Kevin Spacey perfectly captures Bobby's personality. His voice changes with the songs just as Bobby's does, capturing the unique ability that Bobby Darin had to sound like a completely different singer with each 'phase' of his career, from the peppy pop of "Splish Splash" to the big band "Mack the Knife" to the folk/country sound of "Simple Song of Freedom".
If you haven't seen this movie, GO! But whether you have seen it or not, if you are a Bobby Darin fan, you will be able to appreciate Kevin Spacey's portrayal of the Legendary Darin.
Free Music Review: Spacey completely WOWed me , like a bolt of lighteng ! Hit: 5 Stars
I can't imagine anyone doing a better rendition of Darin's songs, so much so that I practically felt like I was in the presence of Darin's ghost while listening to this CD -and the ghost was smiling, snapping his fingers and saying, "Go, man, go!" Totally hip, very, very cool interpretations of Darin's music, but with a unique twist here and there by Spacey. Perhaps Darin's fans will scoff but they shouldn't. This is an amazing work, only whetting my appetite for the movie. The love and passion for Darin's music shows through. Word is, Spacey's mother was a fan of Bobby Darin and if she were alive, I'm betting she'd be moved to tears by Spacey's devotion to Darin's biopic/drama/glimpse into his life. What a wonderful homage to a man who only lived a short time (37 years) as well as a bravura homage to Spacey's mother. ..and her love of Darin's music.
Free Music Review: It's 'Out of the Park' fabulous! Hit: 5 Stars
Kevin Spacey not only re-captured the essence of Bobby Darin, I believe he became a singing sensation of his own in the process. I was listening to it just last night and everytime I do, I get goosebumps. They have managed to re-create the sound and feel of recordings from that era, but with all the fidelity that today's technology affords. The recording is 'flawless' and Spacey's stellar performance would make Bobby Darin both jealous and proud. My kids even commented on just how much they enjoyed the music while watching the movie- and they generally don't like any of that 'old music'. If you haven't seen the movie- see it. AND...If you don't own a copy of the soundtrack- take my advice and buy it! It is a true audiophile's delight. I just hope Kevin decides to do a second album. Great job, Kevin Spacey!
