Free Music Review: Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon
Hit: 5 Stars

This is definetly the rap album of the year. The bar was set high for this album, especially after the release of the huge hit single "Day N Nite". But the album was pushed back on numerous occasions and Cudi started to fade into the darkness after "Day N Nite" started to fizzle on the radio. But it wasnt accidental, as Cudi claimed he wanted to maintain a low profile until his debut album dropped. He avoided any unneeded hype and publicity by laying low and not releasing much material until his album dropped. Cudi is obviously talented, that was obvious after a couple of listens to some of his mixtapes. And what separated him from the rest of the crowd of young and talented rappers (Drake for example), is the fact that Cudi isnt trying to impress anyone. He is just flat out making music and sticking to his guns and doing what he knows how to do best, and that is make interesting hip hop music. His style is one of kind, making it very hard to determine exactly what genre he would be qualified as. Some people call him a Rap artist, some say hes pop. I personally, dont know what i would classify him as because some of the album sounds like rap and some of it sounds like light rock or even pop. Take for example, "Soundtrack 2 My Life", which is a phenominal showcase of Cudi's rapping skills as he glides smoothly over this very contemporary rap beat. Cudi spits venom over producer Emile's banging beat, making the track an instant classic and probably the best track on the album. "Solo Dolo" and "Cudi Zone" are both very typical/standard rap tracks with their roaring synth a bass, both of which are also standouts on the album as Cudi shows why Kanye signed him in the first place, his rapping flow itself isnt the best ive ever heard, but its his out of this world lyrics that make him such an interest artist. But where Kid Cudi excells most is in his diversity. While the tracks i mentioned earlier are perfect examples why people say Cudi is one of the sickest new rappers/flowers out right now, tracks like the underground mellow rock track "Simple As" and the bright-happy go lucky "Up Up and Away" show how truly diverse he is. No other rapper could pull off an album like this. It is completely different than anything i have ever heard from a rap artist before. Like i said, its hard to even call this a hip hop album because alot of the album is techno/light rock music. Like the Kanye produced banger "Sky Might Fall" with its vibrating synths and Cudi's light vocals it could almost be considered a techno song if it weren't for his killer rap verses. And while this album isnt flawless, as it has several songs that dont exactly click with me, its so unique and different from anything i that it would be a shame to rate it anything lower than a five star rating. Thats how truly unique and diverse Kid Cudi and this album are. Like even on the bad songs (Such as the lame attempt at a R&B song in "Enter Galactic" which is truly an embarrassing song to listen ), Cudi still captures you with his out of this world style. And like many other reviewers have commented, this album is also enhanced and sounds even more futuristic when you are under the influence of certain drug that has a side effect of the munchies lol. But that was Kid Cudi's goal with this album. He wanted to make a drug influenced trip-hop album with a purpose besides money and hos. And he was successful, and after this album, Kid Cudi is cemented as one of the most unique and diverse rappers out right now. And like i said the album's music quality isnt perfect or flawless, but because of how extremely different this album is than any other rap album out right now, i have to give it a five star rating. As long as you listen to this album with an open mind (And if you are under the influence lol), im sure you will be just as confused and pleased as i was after the first couple of listens! Good job Cudi on making a completely different rap album than anyone else could or would dare to in this age in rap!

Man on the Moon: The End of Day Poster

"Kid Cudi is at the vanguard of a game-changing new generation of artists," said Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone. "He crosses musical boundaries with an appeal that goes beyond genre, format, race, language, and culture. Cudi lives easily in the hip-hop, indie rock, pop, and R&B worlds - a diversity that shows in his innovative music and his all-embracing persona. He is a born storyteller who brings a positive, life-affirming message to his brilliant lyrical flow and compelling music. There are no clichés in what Cudi does. He is a breath of fresh air - a dynamic and important new voice, not only in the next phase of hip-hop, but as a groundbreaking trendsetter who represents the future. I am thrilled to welcome Kid Cudi into the Universal Motown family." KID CUDI released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in July, 2008 as a free download sponsored by New York streetwear company 10 Deep, leading to an introduction and signing to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music imprint, and in turn, to Cudi's co-writing of four tracks on the platinum Kanye West album 808s & Heartbreak, including the Top 5 single, "Heartless" and stepping out in a featured vocal on "Welcome to Heartbreak." He followed this up with his first Official single; "DAY N NITE" "day 'n' nite" dominated with #1 rankings at multiple radio formats.
