Free Music Review: A Musical Masterpiece

Killswitch Engage's sophomore release "Alive Or Just Breathing" is, like others have said, the best contribution to metal in the last 10 years. There are very few albums I have heard that I truly feel are works of perfection. In my opinion, for an album to be perfect, it must have some sort of originality to it (progression), be passionate, have outstanding lyrics, and must be solid throughout. I cannot stress how critical I am on lyrical content and the number of lead men that really inspire me I can count on one hand. Fortunately, AOJB meets all of my criteria for a perfect album and blows away any standard I ever set for a vocal performance.

Numbered Days (10/10) - The best opener on any album I've ever heard! For a little over 2 minutes, anticipation builds over chugging riffs, crushing drums, and the truly brutal screams of Jesse David Leach. When tension is at its peak, riding in on double bass, Jesse gives the listener the feeling of mercy when he lets his indescribably beautiful singing voice soar.

Self Revolution (10/10) - The initial chorus following the great bass solo gave me chills the first time i heard it. Awesome lyrics and very uniquely written guitar pieces.

Fixation on the Darkness (9/10) - This is probably my least favorite song on the CD even though I still think it's excellent. This song trades the energy of the other tracks for a softer breakdown in the chorus. This is more of the style Killswitch uses in their next release, End of the Heartache.

My Last Serenade (10/10) - The song that made Killswitch Engage! My Last Serenade is probably the most popular and likable song the band has ever produced. This track is very heartfelt and almost saddening. Outstanding lyrical content!

Life to Lifeless (10/10) - Not much to say here, another great song in a CD full of winners.

Just Barely Breathing (10/10) - Whoa. I mean, whoa. This is without a doubt the most epic song on the album and quite possibly one of the most epic song I've ever heard. Amazing.

To the Sons of Man (9/10) - This is probably the heaviest song on the CD, and I could understand some people not liking it as much as some of the other tracks. This is probably the least accessible song on the CD, but at the same time, it's also one of the most powerful.

Temple From the Within (10/10) - A Completely remastered version of the original from their self-titled debut with an extra guitar thrown in. This song shows how much the production shines on the album with Jesse's voice creating an almost unearthly feel in places. This is suiting for the very spiritual content of the song.

The Element of One (10/10) - Who says a good love song can't have a few death growls here and there? A very beautiful song that succeeds in blending in acoustic elements.

Vide Infra (10/10) - Another rerecording from their debut album. A very epic fan favorite that deserves many listens to truly take in all of its elements.

Without a Name (10/10) - An acoustic prelude to an epic finale. Very suiting and thought provoking.

Rise Inside (12/10) - Breathtaking... Beautiful... One of my favorite songs of all time. Inspiring lyrics. (Do yourself a favor and read the lyrics to this album! If you understand every word of Jesse David Leach, it will improve the experience tenfold.)
