Free Music Notes for Ogre TonesFree Music Review: has soul but not enough flow Hit: 4 StarsKings X still makes powerful music, soaring melodies and catchy tunes, but they are a long way from their first 3 albums. It seems some of the songs are great, some have potential, and some I don't know what their motive is. Where is the Lost in Germany, Dogman, and other classics that grab you from beginning to the end? All their songs used to be great, now some are. If they could put a real power rock album, I mean every song with power and soul of Over My Head, I think they would be better served with their fans, and new ones also.
Free Music Review: One of the Best Ever! Hit: 5 StarsI have been a fan of King's X since I was 14. They are one of the best, underated hard rock acts out there. I have to say the 1993 release, "Dogman," has been and shall always be my favorite album, but this one...is the closest thing to that. This record is heavy, punchy and full of attitude, and I loved it. "Alone," "Stay," "If," and "Open My Eyes," are the King's X songs I want to hear. "Freedom," Ty Tabor (guitarist) sings this one ...and this song has SO MUCH TO SAY! They also re-recorded the song, "Goldilox," from their first album, "Out Of The Silent Planet," and it was awesome. I find this band so amazing ...they continually top themselves EVERYTIME! Get this CD!
Free Music Review: Doesn't stand up to repeated listens Hit: 3 StarsIf I wrote a review on this when I first got it I would have given it 4 stars. Indeed, it is better than anything since Ear Candy. However, it doesn't maintain my interest for the following reasons:
1. All the songs are 3 to 3 1/2 minutes long. The songs are stripped down. Missing are the quirky, brilliant guitar gems that Ty is known for on early albums. The guitar playing is simple, the songs sound like any college band. This is surprising since they are now on the Inside Out label, known mostly for Prog. They're not going to get pop airplay, so why not leverage more guitar-driven complex songs? It sounds like they wrote the songs quickly.
2. The songs are forgettable. A couple of nice hooks in Hurricane and If, but the songs really don't SAY anything.
3. Very few, if any, solos. Ty actually said in an interview in Guitar Player that the solos got in the way of the songs.(??!!)
4. They should have named the album "We are not a Christian band, dammit!" They try so hard to prove they are not a Christian band in their lyrics that they don't really say anything. In two interviews, including one in Guitar Player, Ty is obviously irritated by the inevitable question "do you consider King's X as a Christian band?"
Its good to see a new album, but maybe they should try spending more time on crafting the album. OF course, if it sounded like "Gretchen", most critics would gripe too.
Free Music Review: far from really good King's X..... Hit: 2 StarsOK kids - don't know where you all are getting your vigor for this record? this is decent effort, but my no means a "return to glory" or "the best record since whichever". The last really strong song writing and from-the-heart playing was on Tape Head, with Groove Machine, Over & Over, Ocean and Little Bit Of Soul being stand-out tunes. Prior to that, it was the amazingly awesome Ear Candy. This record? overall, it's weak and at times it actually blows (re-do Goldilox?!? what were they effing thinking........and the new version does a dis-service to the original tune) Just dropping the stringed instrument tuning to get a heavy tone is not a means for you all to get excited. King's X have always been one of my favorite bands of all time, but that is only because they have the ability to put real heart & soul into their tunes.......that heart & soul is lacking to a high degree on Orge Tones. Period. A new King's X record has to grab me by the head and hit me hard for me to compare it to any of their past amazing releases.....this one does not cut it.
Free Music Review: A Return to Form Hit: 4 StarsThe last CD from King's X that held my interest was Ear Candy. Although Ear Candy wasn't what I would consider their best effort, it was memorable and had a number of melodic moments, in my opinion. It was a worthy purchase. To me, everything subsequent to Ear Candy has been unpalatable. When I thought about the album title (Ogre Tones) for this release right before listening to the CD, I really braced myself for yet another unpleasant rendezvous with a new release from this band. I would guess the title of the CD is a tongue and cheek gesture however, because I can safely say my fears have been dispelled.
It appears the band is actually attempting to return to the style that galvanized my interest originally. I would put this CD somewhere between Gretchen Goes to Nebraska and Ear Candy. It fits somewhere along that spectrum.
This isn't the absolute best CD King's X has ever released, however I'm simply relieved (and inspired) that the band is attempting to bring back elements in their music that I consider distinctively King's X. Make no mistake though, it's a good CD and has restored my faith in the band's ability to release music worth listening to. It seems they were lost for awhile, but I recommend this CD to anyone who, like me, lost interest after Ear Candy.
