Free Music Notes for Only by the NightFree Music Review: Be Somebody, Please. Hit: 5 Stars
Okay, I could have predicted all the poor reviews this album seems to be getting; KOL gets a stronger fan base and suddenly the critics and fans alike start aiming their weapons at their heroes. Forget'em. The people that don't get this album, well, don't get the band and should stay away from KOL. Please. This is a solid album, full of layered lyrics and awesome soundscapes. I mean, so what if they opened for U2 and might have learned some tricks from The Edge? That's a bad thing? Jeez. Grow a pair, people. And who cares that it doesn't sound like their first album? You know what? Their second album didn't sound like their first album, but people accepted it. Why? Because most people hadn't heard their first album. They went back to it after hearing the second album and then made the comparisons. And the third album didn't sound like the second album. But, you know what? It was better. Why? Because they get stronger with every release. They grow. They expand. You can't put a label on them and that's what displeases people. They aren't easy. It isn't brainless music. I mean, imagine if Bob Dylan recorded the same type of sounding album every single time? What if he never plugged in and recorded his ode to The Rolling Stones? What if no one took any chances at changing their sound? BORING. Change; that's what is it about. Embrace it. This is the best band out there. THEY WILL NEVER MAKE THE SAME ALBUM TWICE. Enjoy them while they are around. Buy this. Listen to it. Study it. It is already misunderstood...and that is a fact.
Free Music Review: A Taste of KOL Hit: 5 Stars
I've always heard of Kings of Leon... I never really liked all their songs. but I did have about one or two that stuck in my mind.
Anyway I had a friend who listens to them, and she was Highly impressed with KOL present album... only by the night. So I had to listen and I loved it. I loved it enough to get my own copy.
Here are my favorites:
1. Closer --> First track on the album.... I love the beat and the way it starts out. The song is about despair, and although thats what it is about, the beat helps it along. It made me feel sad... but in a good way.
2.Crawl --> another good one. Song has me rocking to the beat. love the lyrics.
Manhattan and 17 are also equally good. Be Somebody is really good.
My most personal favorite is "I want you".. Its quite catchy.
I have maybe 2 songs that I'm not crazy about, but I would listen to them either way.... Sex on fire is one of the most popular songs off the album. and I know everybody loves it. Its not a favorite of mine.. I'm not sure, but maybe I heard it being overplayed. but its still a good song...
I used to mainly be an R&B, Pop... hip hop kind of girl... Somewhere along the way a few years ago that I expanded my musical taste.. so now I'm into a bit of everything from Rock to Classical music..
I don't buy albums often, but when I do, its because its a Darn good Album that has more than 2 hits on the album... and this Album constitutes as a Darn Good One.
Free Music Review: New to KOL Hit: 5 Stars
This CD was recommended to me by Amazon, based on some other music I've purchased (how, I don't know). I'm always looking for new bands to fall for, so I gave it a listen. I was immediately hooked by the first song, Closer, both musically and lyrically. The second, Crawl, had a great sound and lyrics too. Third, Sex on Fire, very cool! This CD is very different than what I usually listen to, I was surprised at myself for liking it so much. After listening to all the samples, I decided to purchase it. I was actually anxious waiting for it to arrive, couldn't wait to hear the songs in their entirety. Now understand that I'm new to KOL. I did listen to the samples of their previous CDs, but I just wasn't as drawn to them as I was to Only By The Night. I realize that their sound has changed dramatically, based on others reviews of this latest CD. I understand fans don't usually care for such a drastic change in the sound of a band they already like. However, I just LOVE this CD! Absolutely love it! Caleb's voice and singing style is definitely unique. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I totally dig it. I've been playing this CD for days now, I can't seem to stop... I don't want to.
It's different, but give it a chance... it's soulful, penetrating and addictive. I really think this CD will catch a new audience, like it caught me.
Free Music Review: For the mature Hit: 5 Stars
A lot of alternative music fans bitch and complain about their favorite bands "changing" and their "old stuff being better." These statements have become cultural cliches and hard to take seriously especially when the person criticizing is wrong. As another reviewer said, just because the album isn't exactly what you want to hear doesn't make it a bad album. The Kings deliver quality music here, with tracks like "17" "Be Somebody" and "Sex on Fire" being some of the best of their career. I do believe this album is for a maturer audience. Polished doesn't always equal = bad. Maturation is very healthy for music artist. I'm guessing a lot of these so called fans must be really boring people because alternative music fans seem to be obsessed with hearing the same types of songs over and over and over again without any kind of evolution or progression. Diversity in one's music career genuinely shows their strength as an artist. Most of these redundant copy-car hipster bands will die out, be forgotten and leave no legacy, but the Kings obviously wants to be more than that. I bet many of these whining fans haven't gone to the basics and listened to the pioneers... the Creedence Clearwater Revival and Buffalo Springfield era... music is so much more than a gimmick and a fad. I just wish people could appreciate its art more often.
Free Music Review: YES! YES! YES! Hit: 5 Stars
Okay so im not normally a fan of rock & roll but ive been feeling to listen to music thats a little more edgy than pop & r&b lately.. I began to explore the indie & alternative rock music scene, primarily UK artists such as Muse, Keane etc.. I was on amazon's UK site browsing for rock music when 'Only by the night' came up as one of their best selling albums and the reviewer mentioned that Kings of Leon is one of the UK's favorite American rock bands. I was intrigued and decided to check the album out. When I received the CD i was blown away! The lead singers voice is so raw & full of SOUL! And the guitar harmonies jesus! Are these guys siamese triplets? The guitar sounds just blow my mind, the syncronicity between the vocals & the background musical harmonies is truly amazing. Its nice to have an album where every piece that is played - be it drums, bass, lead guitar or vocals stands out as being brilliant while no one really shows up the other. I also love the southern flavor to the music. This album is well balanced and fresh and edgy and has a nice rawness to it. Im a fan tracks like Sex on fire, 17 and Manhattan but truly I love them all! Its the first album i've heard in a long time I want to listen to over and over again :D Overall 5 stars! :D
