Free Music Review: The Best LP of 1966? Plus Great Bonuses

Volumes have been written about this first of the trinity of great Kinks LPs that took the band to a new level after breaking out of the single-band mold with the bold 'Kinks Kontroversy'. This LP as released stands with the Beatles' 28-minute 'Revolver' as the best albums of 1966. Unlike the original Beatle disc, it is a generous 14-song experience that ranges from complex mood pieces "Rainy Day in June", "Rosey Won't You Please Come Home", and the personal Ray Davies masterpiece "Too Much on My Mind", to the playful "Party Line", "Holiday in Waikiki" and "Little Miss Queen of Darkness". The lyrics make observations about the British class structure that permeate most of the Kinks Kanon from this album forward, most notably on the single "Sunny Afternoon" and it's close relatives "Most Exclusive Residence for Sale" and the hard-rock "House in the Country". This isn't a 'concept' album, though some feel it may be; "Fancy" takes an Indian drone and percussion to another place as Ray tells us 'My love is like a ruby/that no one can see', a few cuts later, the band is playing a twelve-bar blues to "You're Lookin' Fine".
The Bonus Tracks on this issue are truly worth their weight in gold, bridging the gap between this and the followup 1967 LP 'Something Else by the Kinks'. First, is the absolutely brilliant B-side of "Sunny Afternoon", "I'm Not Like Everybody Else". This unusual song is a sort of purpose statement of the band, and of Ray, done in a raucous, minor chord guitar arrangement that rivets the listener. "Dead End Street", a rare track that was the followup A-side to "Afternoon" and is a bleak statement about the other side of those living in 'stately homes' follows. This track uses horns effectively, the earliest Kinks tune to feature them. Its' flipside, and an equally memorable song, is "Big Black Smoke". This is a rare non-LP cut, and echoes the catchy riff of "Sunny Afternoon" in a gloomy tune about a fresh country girl who moves to the oppressive realities of the big city. The additional bonus cuts, "Mr Pleasant" and "This is Where I Belong" are respective sides of a UK single released after 'Something Else', and rarities; not on the level as the first three, they are songs unavailable elsewhere except on lengthy anthologies. "Mr Reporter" is interesting in that it reflects Ray's attitude toward the press and has never been released in any form before.
Even included is the German LP sleeve (the Pye sleeve was not of the band's choosing). The greatest LP of 1966-and possibly the greatest by the Kinks ever (the debate is endless)-plus rare bonuses, a genuine opportunity for some musical history.

1998 reissue of this classic 1966 album by the band,remastered, repackaged with the original artwork, new sleevesleeve notes, lyrics and seven bonus tracks: 'I'm Not LikeEverybody Else', 'Dead End Street', 'Big Black Smoke','Mister Pleasant', 'This Is WheLike Another Side of Bob Dylan and the Beatles' Rubber Soul, Face to Face marks the beginning of the Kinks' classic period. From here on, Kinks records would become more than collections of songs, they'd become coherent frames whose material added up to a complete perspective. This record arguably presents the birth of the "concept album." And in the subcategory of records vying for first concept album (pre-Tommy, of course), such as S.F. Sorrow by the Pretty Things, Face to Face is easily the most rewarding. All of Ray Davies's themes are represented: materialism among the English upper class ("House in the Country," "Most Exclusive Residence for Sale"), depression ("Too Much on My Mind"), and nostalgia ("I'll Remember"). But these themes always lead Davies to penetrating, timeless songs of resignation, and so it is here ("Sunny Afternoon"). This is mandatory listening for any fan of popular music from the '60s. --Gene Booth
