Free Music Notes for The Fight of My LifeFree Music Review: Well two in a round aint bad. Hit: 2 StarsKirk Franklin has IMHO released two great (super) albums in a row prior to "Fight of My Life". And of course he has a long history of successful, relevant, spiritual album releases.
BUT this release is a retread of ??? whatever-- I cannot even say. Even my kids laugh when these songs come on the radio. (I do not play the CD in the car anymore so the only listen is now on the radio).
Overall the album sounds pedestrian, child-ish, a rebranding of so-so secular songs done in a comedic manner. Also the ad-lib and words in between the music just does not hit home, kind of trivial and hard to relate to-- for example he talks about being real and how life knocks you down-- well that's fine we all face such troubles-- that's universal but he continues to speak on this vein without any details, specifics or manner for the listener to relate. I am not trying to get all in his business but to connect with the listener there should be a common language and reality.
Anyway this is not a bash-- I will say positively the beats are very professional and the album is not poorly produced by any measure. Just a retread, unfocused and for a leader like Kirk Franklin quite an under-achievement.
YMMV-- I sure hope so because I have no usage for the CD.
Free Music Review: Very strong and power album Hit: 4 StarsKirk Franklin just may be contemporary gospel's most consistent and perhaps most brilliant artists. Sure Mary Mary put the "hip" into contemporary Christian while Yolanda Adams sings like an angel, but Kirk Franklin always comes with something new, different, and profound. THE FIGHT OF MY LIFE proves to be nothing different than Kirk's constant consistentness. The album shows up a brief two years following the "minister's" brilliant, Grammy award winning HERO. While some may argue HERO had a slight edge on FIGHT, FIGHT proves to hold its own bringing Franklin even more into what black gospel sounds like in the present. There isn't a bad song to be found on this very fine work. Kirk doesn't sing much (nothing new), but he is the brains behind these fine songs as well as providing words much like a minister would in the pulpit. There has always loomed the question is Kirk truly credible since he doesn't sing - the answer, yes. He writes, he teaches, he ministers, he arranges.
"Declaration (This Is It!)" brilliantly lifts off the Kenny Loggins classic from the 1980s. I'd say that Loggins would definitely be thrilled with the end product as "Declaration" is this album's "Looking For You". Sure, it hasn't had the same commericial airplay as "Looking For You", but it is still a gospel force to be reckoned with. "Little Boy" finds Kirk talking real talk with Rev. Rance Allen on one of the albums "call to action" themed numbers. Kirk essentially talks about the youth of America acting spiritually and getting the acts together. It is definitely true and its bombastic horns as well as Allen's phenomenal vocals make it every bit as potent as "Declaration".
Other highlights include the great "He Will Supply", the bright, uplifting "Jesus", the guitar driven-Toby mac assisted "I Am God", as well as "A Whole Nation", "Still In Love", and the hip-hop leaning "I Like Me". There isn't a bad track and FIGHT shows that Franklin is as fresh as he's ever been. 4 big stars.
Free Music Review: declaration Hit: 3 StarsThis cd had to grow on me. It took me a few listens before it actually grew on me. But now I like it.
Free Music Review: A Complete and Great Album Unbelievable Talent Hit: 5 StarsI am not the biggest fan of Kirk Franklin, but "The Fight of My Life," brought out some of his best talent. It is a complete album in the sense that it has something for everyone. Kirk has a lot of great songs on this album; some of my favorite songs are: The Last Jesus, Hide Me and How It Used To Be.
Great work and I promise you this is a complete album and no fillers. You will be blessed.
Free Music Review: Great display of versatility and uniqueness Hit: 4 StarsThere is a song (that may inspire or confirm) for just about every level of Christianity--even the non-Christian. Not matter who you are, at least one of these songs will hit home. Not only is the content inclusive but the album also presents multiple musical genres from the vintage Kirk Franklin gospel to Southern beats and rap to a rock duet with Toby Mac. Great album.
