My favorite sacred sax album! This is a very well done CD. Lots of great old songs, jazzed up just right. You'll hear some great gospel influence and even some pretty good bop licks on this one. Much meatier than just a smooth jazz disc. Great piano by George Duke as well. This is one I can leave in the player for weeks at a time.Free Music Review: ...Tradition with Style...

I'd first heard this cd at a get together among friends, but I like it even better now that I've really had a chance to get into it. These traditional selections will remind you of Sundays with your grandmother waaaaay back in the day. This work is smooth and stylish while being reverent and nostalgic. A friend turned me on to Mr. Whalum by giving me a "thank you" gift of the CD "The Gospel According to Jazz". Later I received "Hymns in the Garden". This CD does so much to lift my soul. I often hum along and praise God right along with Kirk. I literally play it every day for over a year now and I'm not close to tiring of it. Kirk Whalum is one of the last big-toned tenor saxophonists. He plays a collection of Gospel songs backed most of the time only by a rhythm section. Several songs are memorable: I will trust in the LOrd, Christ is all, Precious Lord, He's sweet I know-He knows how much you can bear, and I must tell Jesus (great preaching on that one !).Whalum gets the right feeling from start to beginning.
