Free Music Review: Truely Superb..Noel Coward Meets Buena Vista Social Club

There is absolutely no justice in the world!!True and unique vocal and songwriting talents are cruelly and prematurely taken from this life,whilst the rest of us have to endure the mediocre survivors who couldnt write a lyric or sing an unassisted over produced note, if their life depended on it!!Now that I have said that..down to the review.There is not a bad track on this CD and your enjoyment is enhanced after every listen.The additional video clip that is included in this CD adds that human touch by allowing the listener an opportunity to sight the singer/songwriter,perhaps not in her most comfortable medium.It highlights the fact that she does not need the crutch of MTV mentality to put across her product.The deft use of Latin musicans,horns and programmers to supplement her voice make this a professional and undeniable success.
If Sting was the Englishman in New York,then Ms MacColl was the English Rose In Havana.Rarely do I have the pleasure in this stilted jaded world to listen to such an excellent product,that is humorous and biting,with a touch of paranoia,extremely mature and adult,blended with those infectious Cuban beats,and actually has lyrics that are describing the unrequited love scenerio,from a particularly female prospective,with all the sarcastic humour that would make Noel Coward stand up and applaud.
The career of Ms MacColl,tragically cut short in 2000 by way of one of those senseless accidents that have made legends of lesser stars,was a stop start affair.She has sung with the likes of the Smiths and the Pogues,had an excellent country flavoured breakthrough with *Kite* in 1989 and several thoughtful and fun CDs thereafter.She was such a rare commodity,too good to lose.
*Tropical Brainstorm* is a fitting tribute to an excellent artist.The quirky title,the melodic madness of Cuba the Latin romance mixed with the flawed human nature of relationships,gives the listener a collection of infectious songs to be cherished.
The storytelling mixed with female paranoia and an accurate assessment of the human condition will have you smiling and tapping your fingers to the beat.I defy anyone not to be delighted with *In These Shoes*,*England 2Columbia 0* *Designer Life*and *Us Amazonians*.She sings with a understanding and feel for the songs that make the collaboration of English rose and Carribean Devotee perfect.
The themes of these songs cannot but impress even the most bored and jaded, from the likes of sexual naughtiness,cyberlove,stalking in reverse,the female condition,love unrequited,social commentator..and that beautiful voice and sweet interpretation as in *Autumngirlsoup*..make this one of the best CDs of 2000,and a must have in any collection.
Ms MacColl,like Eva Cassidy,had the advantage of never being overexposed and subjected to the formula of record companies.They both wrote sang or interpreted material that stands away from formula,and in Ms MacColl's case laced with a wicked sense of humour.You get the feeling that she was an artist who may have felt uneasy in the spotlight but the excellence of her product was undeniable.The music world is the poorer for her passing.
The bonus tracks on this Cd are also a delight and her fusion with Cuban beats makes this the female Buena Vista project.Buy this at any cost...I would give it 6 stars easily...Alegria!!
