Free Music Notes for Tropical BrainstormFree Music Review: Quotable Lyrics and Unbeatable Beats Hit: 5 Stars
I've bought more copies of this CD than any other in my collection and here I am buying another. My tenth at least. Why? It's simple - whether I give them as gifts or lend them out, this is a CD people don't want to let go of once they've heard it and neither will you.
In These Shoes may get the lion's share of attention by any of the cuts on this CD but Treachery and England 2 Columbia 0 are even better. Every song offers a sharp insight into male/female relationships today. Treachery has the added bonus of being about a singer who stalks a fan who moves on to another singer. Who but Kirsty can have you singing "Treachery made a monster out of me" as you dance around in your own apartment?
This is a fun, smart album by a smart woman who left us too soon. It's as suitable for a party as it is for a long drive. Essential listening.
Free Music Review: Hasn't left my player for two weeks! Hit: 5 Stars
What do you get when you combine a sly British wit with an open Carribean beat and a genuine love for the Cubanos? Kirsty Maccoll! I bought this one after one listen in the store, and I haven't regretted my purchase one bit. From the fun "Mambo de la Luna" to the lighthearted sarcasm of "In these shoes" or "Here comes that man" or "England 2: Columbia 0" to the wistful "Auntumngirlsoup" to the brilliant latin beats of "Alegria" this album is a must have. I laughed nonstop through "Treachery." Starts with "I'm stalking a fan..."Even the lyrics in Spanish are clever and fairly easy to follow, even for a student whos hasn't spoken in about four years. If I were you, I'd buy this one and "dance around in my socks."
Free Music Review: In These Shoes? I think so!! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is brillant. Kirsty has always been known to write a mean lyric, and this album has 13 gems. Some of the lyrics just make you laugh or at worst grin. "In These Shoes?" is funny, sexy and makes you want to dance. "Here Comes That Man Again" - is a great tale about cybersex, and how absurd it can be! "England 2 Colombia 0" is a classic song, it has some great catchy lines. I will not go on about every track, but musically and lyrically it is the most ambitious thing Kirsty has done to date.Kirsty has rarely achieved singles success, though there are some gems on this album that could catch on. "In These Shoes" deserves to be Number One! This album is fitting epitaph to a great and understated talent. She will be sorely missed.
Free Music Review: Possibly Kirsty's Best Hit: 5 Stars
I can't say I've heard nearly enough of her to call it her finest hour, but TROPICAL BRAINSTORM clearly shows an artist at her peak, which is tragic, because who knows what might have come next had she not been killed, but at least her swansong is a fine one. Kirsty's venture into Cuban rhythm results in an aural feast of lush and unforgettable music. She does what she does best- blending smart, sophisticated songwriting with gorgeous production and that solid, steady, beautiful voice. There's plenty of variety here, from sultry bar seduction to joyful songs of life in paradise, to tragedy and quirky humor. A rich, absorbing, utterly compelling album- a stroke of genius which effectively, if reluctantly marks the end of a dazzling career.
Free Music Review: Spectacular album in every way Hit: 5 Stars
If an album could express the complexity and essential qualities of a person, this is one. Sure, it's a great dance album with big chunky Cuban overtones. And sure, it would be hard to find someone who this album would not appeal to, its likeability is so complete. But the artist reaches the listener on so many levels simultaneously. It's a pure and pleasurable assault that renders the listener helpless with amazement. On the surface, a fun romp, but underneath, deeply profound. I could not get enough of it, and wore out my first CD. The joy and abandonment and humor and wit the album displays is masterful. If I could given it a hundred stars, it wouldn't be enough.
