Free Music Notes for Alive! Box Set
Free Music Review: I think we're gonna have ourselves, multiple rock and roll parties over the course of this week

Oh goody, a Kiss live set containing the first two Alive albums from when they were worth something. And surprise, they're actually on one disc each! Alive speaks for itself, a true rock and roll party...even if it isn't a 100% live party. It just rocks. Their best? I don't care. It'll always be popular in my book. There were a million things they could've done to make Alive II cooler, and whose idea was it to put Tomorrow and Tonight on there? I could pinch them, Hooligan is a 10X better song and should've been here. Along with Take Me and Do Ya Love Me. And why not throw in Flaming Youth while you're at it? Oh well, you get what you get and you don't complain...unless you have to listen to the studio tracks. On the other hand, Rocket Ride should have been on the millenium concert...and the Alive II tour, and every tour after that. The other studio tracks are just plain awful, or would have been much better if kept under three minutes...boring and repetitive. Alive III is a three-star affair, the bonus track Take It Off not being very impressive. The Millenium concert is good, but who was the marketing genius who forgot to put 2000 man on the "millenium concert" disc? (Which, btw, is available along with God of Thunder for download on Amazon mp3). A relatively cool color booklet comes with the box, but it's not that exciting. What's most interesting is the role technology played in making these guys so much cooler than they really were. And they were very entertaining.

There is no shortage of Kiss collections out there, but, as they used to say before Paul, Gene, Ace, and Peter took the stage, "You wanted the best and you got the best!" Spanning four discs, Alive! 1975-2000 makes a great time capsule for Kiss Army completists, packed with a quarter-century of pictures and band reminiscences. And then there's the music. Remastered and packaged together for the first time, the immortal hard-rock one-two punch of Alive! and Alive II together with 1993's makeup-free Alive III showcase the legendary band in their element: driving audiences wild with their thunderous riffs, bombastic ballads, and shameless showmanship. Previously unreleased, Alive: The Millennium Concert captures the reunited and remasked original lineup at the New Year's Eve 1999 stop on what appears to be a never-ending farewell tour. It's safe to say the definitive live Kiss experience is captured here--from Paul Stanley's barefaced buttering-up of the crowd ("This song is dedicated to you, 'cause this song is about people who know what rock 'n' roll is about") to Peter Criss's nearly-epic "God of Thunder" drum solo, and four, count 'em, four, versions of "Rock and Roll All Nite." Kiss was never a band likely to be accused of understatement, and Alive! 1975-2000 is an appropriately exalted celebration of their excess and excellence. --Ben HeegeClassic Rock Music CDs
