Free Music Notes for Detroit Rock City: Music From The Motion PictureFree Music Review: Crappy movie, great soundtrack Hit: 4 Stars
So Detroit Rock City was a bomb and deserved to be with its fart jokes, pimply-faced, skinny guy stripping scenes and all. But the soundtrack actually has a few highlights.
Everclear's opening track is probably my favorite cover of all time, I can't even listen to Thin Lizzy's "Boys Are Back In Town" anymore without being reminded how much better Everclear did it. But Thin Lizzy's classic "Breakout" never sounded better.
"Cat Scratch Fever" by Pantera is very faithful to the original, but the growl in Phil Anselmo's voice gives it a great edge.
The Donna's version of "Strutter" is upbeat and fun, but not great.
The other two cover's by Marilyn Manson and Drain STH are slow and dull.
I almost wish this album was all covers, because the other tracks you pretty much hear on classic rock radio everyday anyway.
But I say pick up a cheap used copy, if for nothing else than Everclear's stellar contribution-think of it as a single, why not pay 5 bucks for a single and rock on!
Free Music Review: A Fun Soundtrack Hit: 4 Stars
I'm a big fan of '70s metal/hard rock (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, KISS, Motorhead, etc.) so i really enjoyed this soundtrack. I especially liked the covers since I already have enough copies of the original "Highway to Hell", "Cat Scratch Fever", "Strutter", etc. on other CD's. My only complaints are, as much as I absolutely love Sabbath, I wish another band (such as Metallica) would have covered "Iron Man" since i already have the original on 487026179 other CD's. The weakest tracks on here are, in my opinion, "Surrender" (never really liked Cheap Trick), "School Days", and unfortunately the new KISS song "Nothing Can Keep Me From You". However, the first eight tracks should keep you rocking whether you're in Detroit or any other city.
Free Music Review: Decent Soundtrack Hit: 4 Stars
I really thought I would hate this flick. From a non-kiss fan's perspective though, I have to say I did laugh throughout. I was exactly the age of these guys in 1978 and hated KISS then and hate 'em more now. Really the film has little to do with KISS. It could have been any band. Fortunately the movie focuses on four guys' journey to the show and not the show itself (only the last five minutes of the movie). Sure it is crass, lude, and obscene but so was 1978! Even if you hate KISS like me it is still worth a watch. The sound track is decent and captures the rock popular during the period, so If that is your thing then this is a good compilation disc.
Free Music Review: Awsome, but could be better Hit: 4 Stars
This CD, in its whole is a bunch of 70's rock covers. However, most of them are pretty good. Pantera did a superb job with the 'Nuge's Cat Scratch Fever, Everclear, running away with one of the best song on this CD. However, Manson screwed it all up with the horrible job of AC/DC's Highway to Hell, which is the album's only sour note. But, the orginal hits are still on here. The best being Van Halen's Runnin With The Devil. KISS also chipped in a good new song. However, it was too mellow to satisfy me. But, that is just my opinion. However, if you want a good rock CD, then this one is it.
Free Music Review: Classic Rock like you've only remembered. Hit: 4 Stars
It seems that now a days, Rock and Roll aint' what it used to be. Sure there are those artists who try to keep it alive. (Lenny Kravitz, Marylin Manson, Korn, KISS) But we simply have fallen away from our musical roots. Thank goodness this movie and soundtrack are being released now. To remind us. Detroit Rock City Soundtrack has gathered the best there is in Rock and Roll (Including KISS) and put them all togethor on this hit CD. If the thrill of classic Rock doesn't move you, then the new single by KISS should. Buy this CD now to hear it.
