Free Music Review: Ten years later....

Ten years later (wow, have we aged that much since this release?)...ten years later and I'm still listening to this pretty regularly - like right now. It has all of the ingredients of a great KISS album, even if the proportions of the ingredients aren't completely to my liking. You will hear Peter Criss playing drums on this CD. You will hear some Ace Frehley guitar solos on this album. You will hear all four original members singing lead vocals on at least two songs each. You will hear several awesome rock anthems that were probably saved for an album like this. You will hear one of Ace's best solo songs. You will hear a strong Peter Criss ballad that was written with the help of Bob Ezrin. Yes, there are ringers on this album (writers and players), but at least they are familiar and likable folks like Thayer, Kulick, Holly Knight, and Kevin Valentine. Finally, you will hear the band playing in its best form during the reunion era. If this is destined to be the last studio album with all four original members contributing, then I can live with that...and I've been thinking about it for ten years. I do agree with others that In Your Face and It's My Life should definitely have been included on the main studio album.

Talk about the roar of the greasepaint: On this first studio effort together since Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley welcomed back once-exiled mates Peter Criss and Ace Frehley with open talons (was it really almost 20 years? How the pterodactyl flies), the unkillable beast called Kiss reels off a few potent additions to its undeniably, er, prodigious body of work. Still stubbornly plodding through the musical tar pits of their classic-rock youth--a little Beatles harmony here, a little Alice Cooper guitar noise there--the dressed-to-ill foursome makes the clock roll back (if not completely unwind) with the fist-waving "I Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock & Roll" and the if-Green-Day-can-do-it-why-not-us acoustic surprise, "We Are One." Better even than the album is the in-booklet merchandise ad, which hawks Kisstory II in all its "440-page, 9-pound" glory, for a mere $158.95.
