Free Music Notes for Symphony: Alive IVFree Music Review: WOW!! I AM AMAZED AT WHAT I HAVE HEARD!! Hit: 5 Stars
I have to be honest... I wasn't expecting much from this album when I borrowed my friend's copy.
I'm a 25 year-old KISS fan, and have been a KISS fan for years. I've seen them four times... once on the Asylum tour when I six (that explains a lot...), once on the Revenge tour when I was 14, once on the Reunion tour when I was 17, and once on the Farewell tour when I was 21. I've seen the make-up on and off, been blinded by all the pyro, heard all the songs from all the eras, and seen three incarnations of this mighty band. I thought that nothing KISS could do could impress me again...
I was wrong.
I love this album. The idea of KISS with a symphony seems a little more far-fetched than when Deep Purple did it, but I'm glad someone had the gall to do it.
The version of KISS we see here is that of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, and Tommy Thayer. Thayer has been a behind-the-scenes member of the KISS family for years, even helping Ace Frehley re-learn his parts for the Reunion and Farewell tours. Mr. Thayer's former band was Black N' Blue, who had two albums produced by Gene Simmons.
Mr. Thayer may get some flack for performing in a costume that he didn't make famous. He may, at first, alienate some hardcore fans. But, upon hearing his first guitar solo of the album, on "Deuce," a favorite concert-opening song of the band, all doubt is erased. Thayer plays Ace's part better than Ace plays them (sorry to say it). Listening to the guitar solo in "Rock And Roll All Nite," you'd swear it was Ace playing. (Sober, of course)
The album is divided into three "acts."
Act One consists of six songs, recorded live with only the band. These six songs are a prime example of the new energy and life that Tommy Thayer has injected into this band. These songs could have been from the first "Alive!" album, for all we know. These songs sound as fresh as they did when I first heard them. The only low point of this act is the inclusion of "Lick It Up." It's always bothered me to see the "make-up KISS" perform songs done by the "non-make-up KISS." (I had the same complaint about "Heaven's On Fire" for the concert I saw on the reunion tour.) Plus, "Psycho Circus" just plain ROCKS!
Act Two is an acoustic set with a small string ensemble. It includes five songs, including "Forever" from 1989. I'd say the same thing about "Lick It Up," but I've always liked this song, and it sounds so good with the strings... and Thayer NAILS the solo! "Beth" is also included on this act, and to listen to it, you'd never guess Peter is the oldest member in this group. "Sure Know Something" off of "Dynasty" and "Shandi" off of "Unmasked" are two other songs included here from two albums that are highly underrated. ("Unmaksed" was the first KISS album I ever owned.)
Act Three is where it really gets good. This act features the band, and the entire Austrailian Symphony Orchestra. Kicking off with "Detroit Rock City," this act really shows the band playing like it's 1975 all over again. Even the KISS songs I never really liked ("King Of The Night Time World" and "Do You Love Me"), I find myself singing along with. Gene pounds out "God Of Thunder" with so much intensity because... well... he IS the God of Thunder. He also shines on "Great Expectations," which get an extra kick from the Austrailian youth choir. Paul belts out "Love Gun" with a passion that I don't think I've ever heard from him... it's truly his high point on the album. "I Was Made For Lovin' You" gets an extra kick from the symphony. The true highlight on this album is "Black Diamond." This has always been one of my favorite KISS songs, and Peter sings this better than he did on "Alive!" A closer listen to this also reveals Peter playing in perfect time. (Once viewing the DVD, one can see that he had a monitor on his drum kit so he could view the conductor. It helps.) The obvious closer is "Rock And Roll All Nite," and it's a fitting way to end this masterpiece.
This truly is worth the money. This is a live album that will see much rotation in my stereo.
Most people have a problem with live albums... they view it as a waste of money. I see it as the true test of a band... "Can they pull it off live?" KISS has answered this questions on four tremendous live albums. Hearing this album in 2004 makes me feel what I believe KISS fans before me, in 1975, felt when they first heard "Alive!" With this band, I truly feel that they lay it on the line for their fans, and they have given us a great gift with this. KISS are the real deal... a no-nonsense rock band that has weathered much to get what they have, and thank their fans with every album and concert. To Paul, Gene, Peter, and Tommy: THANK YOU!
BUY IT!
