Free Music Review: Rock And Roll All Nite To "The Very Best Of Kiss"
Hit: 5 Stars

To many, they were 1970s' hard rock legends who wore lots of makeups and made loud music to make your parents go beserk. But remove the eyeshadow and other nonessential elements, Kiss were serious musicians who never failed to deliver. Now, 30 years after they first burst onto the scene, their music still speaks to a generation of kids who just want to rock and roll all nite and party everyday.

That being said, "The Very Best Of Kiss" features all of the major Kiss classics from 1974 to 1992, including big hits as well as popular album tracks.

Kiss made their first assault in 1974 with their self titled debut album. Though it didn't sell very well, it developed a massive following for the band and yielding the album rock smashes "Strutter", which to me has one of the all time greatest riffs ever, and "Deuce".

They steadily built up their fan base with their next two albums, "Got To Choose" and "Hotter Than Hell", represented here by "Got To Choose", "Hotter...'s" title track and "C'Mon And Love Me".

By 1975, they were big enough to release their first of about five live albums. The album, "Alive", shot into the top ten and yileded their breakthrough hit (and signature song) in the top twenty single "Rock And Roll All Nite". Kiss were officially on the map.

1976's "Destroyer" became their biggest selling album yet and gave them their first top ten hit in the ballad "Beth", a sweet ballad that was a major departure for the band: instead of a loud, guitar driven rocker, it was a tender, soft piano ballad. Also from that album is "Detroit Rock City" (which lent its name to a really crappy movie) and "Shout It Out Loud".

1976's second Kiss album, "Rock And Roll Over" was another success, yielding two top twenty hits in the tender acoustic ballad "Hard Luck Woman" and the raucous "Calling Dr. Love". Also from that album is the raunchy "I Want You", which starts off as tender song than explodes in your face as an all out rocker.

1977's "Love Gun" sold well, but failed to yield a major hit. However, the album's biggest hit, the 1950s' - style pedophilic ode "Christine Sixteen" (a personal favorite) is included, as well as the title track (which I was never really a fan of).

1978 found Kiss at the height of their popularity. That was the year when all four members (Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Paul Stanley) released their own solo albums. Simmons' did the best on the album charts, but only Frehley's was the only one that yielded a hit single. "New York Groove" was a top twenty hit that is a truue classic, and it enjoyed a rightful resurgance of popularity when it was used those post - 9/11 "I Love New York" ads.

1979's "Dynasty" continued their platinum streak, yielding the top twenty foray into disco, "I Was Made For Lovin' You", which had the traditional disco beat but stayed true to the band's rock roots. The album may have been panned, but this song is awesome.

Three years are skipped when we get to "I Love It Loud", an awesome heavy metal song with a great false fade out. "Lick It Up" is a very underrated number that I tend to like.

1989's "Hot In The Shade" yielded the top ten, Michael Bolton - penned smash power ballad "Forever", a beautiful song and their biggest hit since "Beth". Closing this album is the fantastic "God Gave Rock & Roll To You II".

This is truly a great album. Definitely a must for any music fan. Buy it as soon as possible.

The Very Best of Kiss Poster

Japan exclusive 'Memorial Edition' of 2002 compilation featuring 21 tracks. Details TBA. Mercury. 2004.
Sure, Detroit had the MC5 and the Stooges, but Long Island's Kiss threw down their own gauntlet. Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss cleaved a spot between glam, punk, waning Woodstock rock, and adult-oriented pop and became a phenomenon in the process. Kiss kept their music simple and, of course, sexual, with the likes of "Hotter than Hell," "Love Gun," and "Calling Dr. Love," paving the way for the waves of pop-metal sexpot wannabes and winning fans in such quantities that they launched the so-called Kiss Army. Their magnetism permeates this 21-song set, with Criss sounding so lonesome he could cry on "Beth," and the fire-breathing, blood-spitting Simmons unfailingly serving up a comical mix of menace and lasciviousness. The version of "Rock & Roll All Nite" comes from 1975's crowd-noise drenched Alive!, cut at the time when live albums were de rigueur. This collection was made smartly enough that only four songs come from the band's post-Dynasty period, making The Very Best of Kiss an essential primer on 1970s rock grandeur. --Andrew Bartlett
