Free Music Review: A great way to warm up to Tuvan music

This is a sort of novelty CD that you probably never would have heard of if you were not into the writings of the late Richard P Feynman (a bongo playing theoretical physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project), had never heard of Mongolia, and was not a fan of country music. All at the same time. Fortunately, as I fall under this rather unique category, I can say that this is the most "fun" recording of traditional Tuvan throat singing I've ever heard. I'm a huge fan of Ondar's, and was really impressed by his vocalizations.
Yes, the instrumentations and overlapping tracks can get overwhelming for someone who does not have much musical background, but the hidden track at the end explains every component - believe me, you will not regret it. The story behind "Two Countries, One Tribe" was both hilarious and heartwarming.
Frankly, I think there are too many "purists" out there who would prefer to simply have straight throat singing. But Ondar's willingness to colaborate on such a recording reveals and open-ness which seems to come naturally to traditional Tuvan throat singers. They see that their art could very well die with them, and are willing to share it with those outside their own culture - whatever it takes to save their music. And I think it's wonderful.
Back Tuva Future Poster
The ancient, multitone singing technique from Tuva (which lies just north of Mongolia) is relocated to the heartland of America on Back Tuva Future, a CD recorded by Nashville honchos Jim Ed Norman, David Hoffner, and Ralph Leighton. With guest appearances from Willie Nelson, Randy Scruggs, and Bill Miller, these 10 tracks take on the shape of a multicultural hoedown in more ways than one. Curiously, the country ethos and Tuvan tradition have much in common--herding livestock, horses, and (of course) pretty women--so the subject matter is harmonious. The combination of Ondar's guttural, polyphonic throat singing and country music is at first distracting but eventually gets carried along by the enthusiasm of the participants. There are also a couple of hip-hop/rap tracks and occasional New Age reference points, so you can assume that this genre bender is aimed at the adventurous listener rather than the anthropologic purist. --Derek RathInternational Music CDs
