Free Music Review: One of the best in nu-metal
Hit: 5 Stars

I wonder how many of you will be frightened away by this infamous 'nu-metal' stigma. Yes, Korn's Follow the Leader is a typical nu-metal album. However, it stands out for two reasons: firstly, Korn are the first and perhaps the best band in the genre, and their music should be considered trademark Korn, not generic nu-metal; secondly, Follow the Leader is Korn aruably at their best and most creative. Unlike most others, this is a rich, adventurous and entertaining album.

As a nu-metal album, it has got many elements hated by haters: rapping, start-stop guitar playing, hip-hop rhythms, ridiculous - in places - lyrics. But then again, nu-metal is not meant for everyone; it is generally a gloomy and aggressive, but cathartic and self-assuring music. This album has got lots of energy which is best evident on the opener, 'It's On!'. So it is up to you to decide whether such music is for you. And Korn meant much to a whole generation of teenagers (so-called Korn kids), who had to seek something assuring in life and to get rid of their anger in a non-destructive way. You can see those kids on the album cover, and probably many of people you run into in the street have been Korn kids also. Some of them remember their roots, some don't, but still, Follow the Leader is a real Zeitgeist, a depiction of teenage rap-metal culture circa 1998-2000.

One more advantage of this album is that it is Korn's most adventurous, both lyrically and musically. While the subsequent albums' lyrics fell into the ?I can't seem to get away" trap too frequently, here Jonathan Davis touches on a comparatively wide range of subjects, such as the aforementioned Korn kids in general (Children of the Korn), love relationship (Cameltosis), death (Justin, which is about a boy who was to die of cancer and wished to meet Korn), Jonathan's memories from the time he worked in a mortuary, and relationship to one's children (Seed). Sonically, it is Korn's cleaniest album, with every guitar and drums hook heard well. But what deserves special attention are the instruments (as far as guitars are concerned, it is hard to find a better album in rap-metal). I'll try to analyze them in each song and review the tracks:

It's On! - 5/5. A great opener, one of my favourites and imho Korn's most energetic song, along woth Blind. The guitars break in the chorus is just fantastic.
Freak on a Leash - 5/5. This was the album's hit single and Korn's most well'known song. So melodic and powerful, with Jonathan's voice changing from melodic singing to growling to scatting in the bridge, it is just amazing.
Got the Life - 4.5/5. a fast-paced, almost danceable track with a nice bridge and explosive chorus. What could have been better here are the drum parts which are a little too flat.
Dead Bodies Everywhere - 5/5. Melodic, multi-structured, and fast, this is a masterpiece. Check out the creepy guitars in the bridge that eventually lead to explosive outro.
Childern of the Korn - 4/5. A rap duet with Ice Cube is entertaining and combines electronic sounds and guitars.
B.B.K. - 5/5. A weird, jungle-sounding song, which is in fact one of the best here. It certainly adds an additional colour to the album.
Pretty - 5/5. An emotional ballad with quiet verses and loud chorus. Again, guitars soung great here, taing the song to another level.
All in the Family - 4/5. This Jon's word duel with Fred Durst is a whole lot of fun, no matter how much you've listened to it.
Reclaim My Place - 3.5/5. Not the most cohesive song, this has got strong instruments. The part I like most is the bridge.
Justin - 4.5/5. This song is filled with (otherwordly) guitar effects, and the vocals are equally haunting. A dark, spacey experience.
Seed 4.5/5. Sometimes, this song sonds so gentle, it somehow brings nostalgic feeling. Catharsis peaks with this track.
Cameltosis - 3.5/5. Nothing special, the only real advantage of this slow and trippy rap-metal number is that it brings much-needed change to the ominous landscape of the album's second half.
My Gift to You - 5/5. Superb closer, with bagpipes and tortured lyrics. This is like walking through a dark gothic church. Definitely pay attention to the bridge, it is one of the most personal pieces Korn have written.

So if my review hooked you, buy the album and listen to it until you feel the same - and hopefully much more.

Follow the Leader Poster

First 12 tracks are blank...music begins on track 13.
Love 'em or despise 'em, you've got to give Korn props for kick-starting a new metal movement that blends aggressive hip-hop rhythms with roaring hate-metal riffs. In the wake of the band's 1994 debut, many like-minded groups cropped up, including Deftones, Snot, and Limp Bizkit. But with the release of Korn's disappointing 1996 sophomore effort, Life Is Peachy, the imitators seemed likely to usurp the innovators. Maybe that's why Follow the Leader is so crafty and inspired. Instead of continuing on cruise control, Korn have diversified their formula, experimenting with mood and dynamics while intensifying their melody and noise thresholds. "Got the Life" blends a seductive disco beat and vocals reminiscent of "Epic"-era Faith No More with oppressive guitar chimes and squawks. "Children of the Korn" features a propulsive rap beat, throbbing bass lines, and angry guest vocals by Ice Cube. But just when Korn's groovin' psychedelic fury starts to make listeners see red, the band lashes out with "All in the Family," a hilarious rap-metal diss-fest duet with Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, that proves Korn are much more than the sum of their rage. --Jon Wiederhorn
