Free Music Review: Korn Goes Pop with Amazing Results
Hit: 5 Stars

Korn's break-out 1998 album, "Follow The Leader," is the moment where the Bakersfield Five went from semi-underground underdogs to mainstream MTV heroes. Almost overnight, as soon as "Got the Life" hit, things would never be the same again. Helping to, for better or worse, usher in a new generation of rockers, Korn proved to be both iconic and experimental on their third effort.

With producer Toby Wright (Alice in Chains) taking over from Ross Robinson (who helmed the first two albums), "Follow the Leader" is slighlty less visceral and gritty than the band's previous material. From the groovy, whisper-to-a-scream opener of "It's On!" it's obvious that this is a different kind of Korn, albeit, a funkier and more experimental outfit with the the benefit of experience working with them.

Cuts like "Got the Life" and "Freak on a Leash" prove to be great radio hits, but elsewhere, the band builds on their established sound on the intense "Dead Bodies Everywhere." A song that perhaps could have existed in the Ross Robinson days, "Dead Bodies" is aided by top-notch production which highlights the seething riffs delivered by Munky and Head in it's final breakdown, with frontman Jonathan Davis giving a bone-chilling performance.

Elsewhere, the band embraces the rap-rock movement with some mixed results. "Children of the Korn," a collaboration with Ice Cube, gives the band a bit of credibility, and finds the band meshing almost too easily with their hip-hop influences (which were only briefly present on album's past). "All in the Fmaily," a rap-battle of sorts between Davis and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, on the other hand, plays as amateurish and immature and only goes to slow the momentum down. Thankfully, Tre from the Pharcyde comes to the rescue with "Cameltosis," a cool, chill and dark tune that shows just how potent a combination rap and rock can be when done right.

All in all, "Follow the Leader" proves to be, time and time again, a creative and commercial success. Even if you've heard it's key songs a million times, you just can't help but be left in awe but the sheer sonic madness of it all. Korn are masters at taking the simplest thing and making it fresh (see the sustained riffing of "Justin") and on this album, they prove that you don't have to be guitar virtuosos or lyrical geniuses to be effective. "Follow the Leader" earns its place as a Korn classic, and even beyond the singles, is an album that will prove rewarding to those seeking a fun and fresh rock album.

Free Music Review: Korn Finally Found Their OWN Sound on "Leader."
Hit: 5 Stars

If you want "hard," it's in here.
If you want "crazy," it's in here.
If you want "frustrated," "confused," "passionate," "angry," "humble," "touching," or funny," it's in here.

As Korn albums go, this one is a definite highlight. Starting with Track 13, "It's On" is the classic, throat-grabbing, metal blast as singer Jonathan Davis screams, "Come ONNNNNN. It's ONNNNNN," like a man possessed. (We all know he is.) The dual guitars of Munky and Head are heavier than on any previous album, drummer David's virtuoso percussion playing resembles some of Stewart Copeland's work on The Police, and along with Fieldy's bass, the groove they all deliver just punches you in the chest. HARD. If you wanted to boil Korn's music down to the basic, hard metal sound, this is the song to hear.

Next, we get to their singles: "Freak On a Leash," with Davis' "scat-rap" that gave me chills the first time I heard it, and "Got the Life" which is arguably Korn's most accessable song. It's catchy, heavy where it needs to be, and well arranged.

Another notable tune is "Dead Bodies Everywhere," which is Jonathan's ode to his Dad, who tried to warn him about the music business.

Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit) and Jonathan team up for a classic verbal clash in "All In the Family" that sounds so real, some people actually thought that Fred and Jonathan hated each other. They don't, but to hear them ripping on each other like two high schoolers is hilarious.

One reviewer here unfairly dismissed the song "Justin," which is about the band's experience with a kid whose dying wish was to see the band. The band met the boy and they were so weirded out that this boy's final wish was to meet them proved to be a profound experience. Not knowing that, it is easy to think of the song they wrote as forgettable, but it's not. It's one of the most passionately played songs on the album because it's not about riches, or teen angst, or parental disapproval, but it's about how the band dealt with a dying boy who thought the world of Korn. It is a heavy song, but it is still evident that is was written from the heart.

This is Korn's best album to date. It is the album that skyrocketed the band into a higher level, and it is well worth the time and money to take the trip with them.

Free Music Review: GET RID OF THE 5 Stars

Cmon Korn, get rid of that rap s@#t!! I hate rap, it stinks, and it shouldn't be in rock or metal or anything related to those two categories of music. OK, now that I've expressed my hate for rap, I will continue with this review. The last of the 6 Korn CDs that I have purchased. This CD is a very good CD (except for the rap) and would recomend it. Here are the songs.

1-12: silence (this is kinda stupid to me, why would you have silence?).
13. It's On!: Very good song. Not the best song on the CD but it sure is a hell of a starter song. 9/10
14. Freak on a Leash: I love this song. Sounds nothing like the first two albums Korn did. So good. 10/10
15. Got the Life: I love this song too. Kinda pop rockish and also sounds nothing like the first two albums. This song and Freak on a Leash are the two best songs on this CD. 10/10
16. Dead Bodies Everywhere: Good begining, kinda creepy. Other than that its a good song. 8/10
17. Children of the Korn: The first rap song. This one is actually alright. I don't mind it. It still is rap and like i said above, RAP SUCKS! 2.5/10
18. B.B.K: Good song. 9/10
19. Pretty: Another good song. 9/10
20. All in the Family: The second rap song. This one SUCKS. OMG why did Korn even record this CRAP. Features that guy from Limp Bizkit... this song is not worth listening too. 0/10
21. Reclaim my Place: Good song (haven't really listened to it though, I find that kinda strange). 8/10
22. Justin: 9/10
23. Seed: 9/10
24. Cameltosis: The third and last rap song on this album. I can't even listen to the whole thing, it is so bad. This song is so bad, not worth listening too, sucks, horrible, its crap. 0/10
25. My Gift to You: Awsome song. After the song, it goes on to another song about 2-3 minutes after. Some spanish guy sings it, alright song. 10/10

There it is. 93.5/130. 71.9%. That is low for Korn, but if Korn got rid of those sh@#ty rap songs, it would of gotten a 91/100. 91%. That is a lot better. Just got to throw out those cRAP songs. But other than the fact that there is rap in this CD, it is a very good CD. Recomended.

P.S. Skip the cRAP songs. (R.A.P=Retards Attempting Poetry... Not that I'm calling Korn retards, I'm calling the rappers retards... you get the point, I hate rap.)

Free Music Review: Korn is not sellouts, and this music rocks
Hit: 5 Stars

Follow the Leader is better than their old stuff...more raw, with music that they actually took time to figure out. Davis's voice can sound ugly and annoying, but in most parts of this CD he has improved a LOT.

A list of songs:

13. It's On! This is a VERY good song...perhaps the best song I have ever heard by KoRn. Davis's lyrics are heavy, tragic and deep. It's an excellent song to start out with, and is as heavy as their older material, filled with rage and raw power.

14. Freak On A Leash--This is another very good song, but one accused of not being hard to play...SO WHAT! It sounds good. When thinking of this song, I'm sure Korn wasnt like "Hey, its too easy to play." The chorus is very good.

15. Got The Life---This is also a good song, with an excellent chorus to it...the only week part would be the first verse, but this is definately a first rate song.

16. Dead Bodies Everywhere is also very good, a haunting KoRn song that Jon brings his rage out in.

17. Children of the Corn---A very week entry in the CD, not because it's rap from Korn and Ice Cube, but because it's rap period...something Korn cant pull off..

18. B.B.K. is a very good, depressing song which is liked by people who dont even like Korn or this CD.

19. Pretty is another song about rape and is nothing special.

20. All In the Family has good music and is okay but once heard too much the song loses it's edge. It isnt funny either, but its good enough to sound enjoyable.

21. Reclaim My Place is useless.

22. Justin is a nice, empathetic song written by Davis and is enjoyable the second or third time around.

23. Seed is a song starting off relaxed and is one of the high points on this disc, as I found myself listening to it two or three times in a row, sometimes more than that.

24. Cameltosis is crap.

25. My Gift To You is tied with It's On as the best Korn song I have ever heard...what a way to go out. Jon's vocals are hauntingly painful and the bagpipes in the beggining are cool and the verse is kind of repetetive but the chorus absolutely ROCKS.

26. Earache My Eye is the hidden song which is cool enough to be repetetive and still not get old. Cheech Marin's vocals suck, but the music is very cool.

All in all an excellent album.
