Jonathan Davis, frontman and vocalist of KoRn, is undeniabely one of the most twisted minds in modern rock, joining the ranks of artists such as Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and the endlessly zaney B'jork. (...) His first job was to work at a mortuary, wich is the source of the song "Dead Bodies Everywhere". (...) In his lyrics he exposes middle America for the horror that it is, and makes kids who feel alienated because they're individuals feel proud to be who they are. The song subject matter is very intelligent, as is the man himself. Jon is certainly intelligent, and certainly a rather scary individual. He can be frightening without wearing globs of make up or five inch soled boots. His music video for "Somebody Someone" gave me the creeps. As for the music itself, there's nothing in the music world toda that's like it. KoRn takes sounds that are ugly or awkward and put them together. They tune their instruments in strange fashions, and Jon's sinister voice adds to the formula. All of it combined creates a sound that is very unique and very cool sounding. KoRn have spawned alot of copycats with their metal/funk/rap sound, but none have come close to all that is KoRn. The CD is very diversified and you can listen through the whole thing without being dissapointed or bored. Every song on here is good. The music actually begins on track thirteen, skipping twelve tracks to honor the memory of young Justin, who they sing about in one of their songs. The first song, "it's On', took my breath away. It is an all out attack, a real in your face metal song, the perfect choice to start out the album. The second, "Freak on a Leash", is a real KoRn classic, an amazing song that has a great video on MTV to boast of. Another song that really sticks out is "Dead Bodies Everywhere", which mixes hard rock with a creepy, twisted nursery twinkle sound. "All in the Family" is a hilarious song that sees Jonathan and Fred Durst of Limp Bizket throwing insults back and forth. The twist ending of this song made me burst into laughter. All in all, I definitely recommend this CD. It's worth every penny and more. From now on, KoRn is the rock band by which all other rock bands must be judjed.
Free Music Review: Hard, yet extremely musical Hit: 5 Stars
This cd is the best cd you will probably hear in a long while. If you're into hard rock/metal, but are unimpressed by the lack of melody and creativity in today's nu-metal (slipknot, drowning pool, etc.), you should most definitely enjoy this cd. It is revolutionary, as claimed many times by others, and is just superb. This is indeed hard music, but not at all noise, this is an amazing cd. Don't label them As rap-rock, with Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock, they are much more talented, and the music is nothing like that. Every song on this cd is great and unique in its own way.1. It's On!: Great song, very Korn-esque; great song to start off with. 2. Freak On A Leash: very unique and great video made with it 3. Got The Life: My fav song on this cd, or any other korn cd, great guitar playing, back-up singing and lead vocals 4. Dead Bodies Everywhere: another great song, interesting little music-box piece in it 5. Children of the Korn: Hard rock with rap; although I'm not a rap fan, I think this is an incredibly quirky song, yet a brilliant piece of art 6. B.B.K.: Amazing song, great vocals, guitar, bass, drums, everything. This is a Korn Song 7. Pretty: Another great song, very sad lyrics, which give it a sad, eerie, yet enjoyable feel (enjoyable because it is such a good song, not because of sadness) 8. All In the Family: Honestly, I dislike Fred, but this is a good song, even though a rap-ish song, its lyrics are very entertaining 9. Reclaim My Place: another good song with amazing vocals that go along very well with the heavy, yet somehow melodic, guitar riffs 10. Justin: I LOOOOVE this song, it has the amazing melodic feel to it, with great back-up singing 11. Cameltosis: Another rap-ish song, not bad, though, very interesting and different 12. My Gift To You: What can I say about this song; excellent, weird, song, with a great, hilarious hidden track in Earache My Eye I think this is an amazing cd, and you should, too. And I don't think I give Fieldy enough credit. He is an amzing bass player. Anywho, the word that I've used so commonly to describe it, and the word I think sums it up is melody. Hard, yet melodic.
Free Music Review: Korn's 2nd best CD. Great heavy/alternative album... Hit: 5 Stars
On Follow the Leader, Korn took a turn away from their intense/hardcore sound that defined their first two albums, and went in an experimental direction. The result is an outstanding heavy/alternative album which took Korn's sound to the next level. While not as good as their classic self-titled CD, Follow the Leader is definately better than Life is Peachy. All the songs on FTL are very good, particularly "Justin", "BBK", & "Dead Bodies Everywhere" just to name a few. And the singles definately aren't bad either. There's a nice variety of styles on FTL. Everything from funk, rap, metal, crossover, alternative, humor, it's all here on FTL. "Children of the Korn" is an excellent example of rap-metal being done right. Getting a good, hardcore rapper like Ice Cube was a perfect match for Korn's heavy, vulgar sound. Then there's "Cameltosis" with Tre from the Pharcyde. While not a standout track, it still comes across as being a smooth, chilled out song with a message I can relate to. FTL also has its funny moments as well. "All in the Family" was funny back in 98, but I usually skip that track now. "Earache in My Eye" (the hidden track) is a hilarious song with Cheech that rocks out pretty hard. "Seed", my favorite song on the album, to me shows why Korn is such a great band. Its a very creepy, intense, hard-hitting song, with great atmosphere. Then there's songs like "Pretty" & "My Gift to You" which are more chilled out songs, but still very powerful in their own right. Overall, if you're a metal purist, you won't like FTL because its primarily an alternative CD. Korn are not metal & they have never claimed to be so. They're just 5 guys who like to make good, intense, energetic music & incorporate different styles into their music to create something compelling & original. And regardless of how many records FTL sold, and regardless of the scores of embarrassing new Korn fans that jumped on the bandwagon when it came out, FTL is still an outstanding CD with great energy, great songs, and a great thrashy/sinister/funky vibe.
Free Music Review: One of the best metal albums of all time...SIX STARS!! Hit: 5 Stars
I can almost not say enough good things about this C.D. It is KoRn's best album, and probably my favorite C.D. that I own.
I'll start by defending some of the bad reviews: It IS a difinitive nu-metal album (with some rap and guest stars), but that definately doesn't mean it's bad. KoRn were one of the first ones to do it...they are the godfathers of nu-metal. Other bands copied KoRn, not the other way around. Also, I don't feel there is "too much rap" on here because the rap songs usually include rock or morph entirely into a hard rock song. The songs with rap have a good beat, and if KoRn didn't do something like this, they'd be criticized (falsely) for making the same album again and again.
Highlights include:
"It's On" is a good song, not "Freak on a Leash", but creepy with good yelling and get ups. "Freak" is great! One of the songs KoRn is best known for. Good metal, good lyrics, good proper singing and good scat near the end. Another of John Davis' songs where he's mad at the record industry. "Got the Life" is also good, a good mix with fast vocals at the beginning which then turn into regular, but I have no idea what he's singing about and it may be my least favorite track on the C.D. "Dead Bodies Everywhere" is sheer awesome. Listen to it and you'll know what I mean. "Children of KoRn" is also great. The first song on here with rap elements, but also very good hard rock, yelling, proper singing and a good growl. Very catchy. "BBK" is my second favorite song on here. With bagpipes and scat. "My Gift to You" is slower, but still great. "Boom boom" type of riffs.
EVERY SONG ON HERE IS GOOD. So good in fact, that KoRn could almost have enough for two albums.
Davis' vocals are impressive. He can yell, rap, scat, and sing properly.About every song on here has the potential to be a hit song, and the C.D. is long enough to fully satisfy and so you can listen to it many times without being sick of it. It is very catchy and none less than awesome. Maybe a little more mainstreem than usual, but why would anyone dislike this? A definate buy!!
Free Music Review: An Important Piece Of The Korn Katalog (LOL Catalog)...4.5 stars... Hit: 5 Stars
Korn's LIFE IS PEACHY debuted at No. 3 on the billboard charts, further cementing Korn's importance in the rock-metal vein. While some critics didn't buy Korn's approach, FOLLOW THE LEADER certainly brought them back. With its diverse textures, grooves, and themes, LEADER certainly brings Korn back into the spotlight, and it's one of the best Korn releases next to TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR and the self-titled debut.
"Got The Life" is an irresistable slice of catchy metal, and with its disco-ish groove, it certainly fits the billing that's on display here. "Freak On A Leash" is, in many ways, a breakthrough for Korn, a stylish, dance-able yet hard and heavy handbanger track that's got a hell of a groove (the video was also a major breakthrough for Korn, garnering them music video awards and such). Elsewhere, Korn explores serious hip-hop on three tracks: the textured and spacy "Cameltosis" which features members of Pharcyde; the flat-out hilarious rap-metal diss between Davis and Limp Bizkiteer Fred Durst on "All In The Family" that should put other feuds to shame; and the angry and wicked "Children of the Korn" which features none other than rap superstar Ice Cube. But Korn also show their aggressive side as well, with "It's On" leading the charge and going right for the jugular. "Justin" is a creepy but touching tribute to a Korn fan that the band had visited in a hospital. The fan was coming down with a debilitating disease, so Korn paid a visit and the visit inspired "Justin". "My Gift To You" ends the album on a sensational note, and the hilarious hidden track cover of "Earache My Eye" features Cheech Marin...you're just bound to laugh.
Korn still has not sold out, and on the impressive FOLLOW THE LEADER, they diversify their album to great effect, and influences of metal, funk, rap, hip-hop, and rock certainly collide on this heralded effort. Korn were not followers, but they were very much leaders of their generation, and FOLLOW THE LEADER remains another statement to justify that claim.
