Free Music Review: The Triumphant Return of Korn

I bought this CD on a whim while browsing the CD's at Hot Topic with my friends. This CD was on sale and a little voice in my head told me to give it a chance. So I paid the ten bucks for the album and brought the CD home.
Honestly, I didn't know what to expect with this album. I had been following the progress of this album for some time now, after hearing that Ross Robinson (the crazy producer who helped Korn forge their sound) was working with on the album. I also became more interested after hearing the song "Oildale (Leave Me Alone)". That song contained the same relentless emotion and energy present on Korn's older albums (which are among my favorite CD's in my collection). I think Ross' unorthodox producing and recording techniques really brought the emotions out of the band and lit their fire once again.
Jonathan Davis really pours his heart out in each song on this album, something that was seemingly absent from their last albums. His emotions are deeply rooted in every song on the album, especially on the closing track "Holding All These Lies".
James 'Munky' Schaffer and Fieldy also sound better than ever, playing their respective instruments with as much heart as Jonathan puts into his vocals. Also check out Munky's epic solo in "Holding All These Lies".
The band's new drummer Ray Luzier has really seemed to find his niche in Korn, playing a style similar to their old drummer David while also retaining his own unique style.
In short, this album isn't a rehash of Korn's classic albums from the 90's but it is definitely a breath of fresh air in the saturated, post grunge dominated rock world. While original members David Silveria and Brian 'Head' Welch are not present in the recording, the album still manages to sound like classic (or is it Klassic?) Korn. If you loved Korn's older albums than you will find a lot to like in this album. And if you hated Korn's mainstream sound on See You on The Other Side and the Untitled album, you'll also dig this album.
