Free Music Review: Great, yet troubling... Hit: 4 Stars
I'll start with a cliche: I'm a huge Korn fan. I'm definitely not the biggest and am a more recent convert, having finally fell into their music trap with 'Did My Time' and then going back to learn all of their music. Korn is great live, of that there is no disagreements.
For those who haven't heard them live yet, this is a terrific cd to get a good taste. With the exception of the first song, 'Did My Time' which felt rushed, each song is terrifically performed at the various venues (New York, Maryland, Universal Studios, Woodstock 99, etc). However, the whole cd feels like a marketing ploy. Titled "Live and Rare," it definitely lives up to the first moniker. But rare? Well, 'Earache My Eye' is a hidden track as is their cover of 'One.' 'Proud' is from the soundtrack of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which I guess qualifies this as rare. But for some reason I know this song (and I don't have nor have I listened to the I Know... soundtrack)...I *think* it was also a hidden track, but I can't be certain.
Troubling also in that there is at least one song that has been edited. 'Right Now' is the more radio friendly version that includes "Shut up or I'll bust you up" as opposed to its original version. On a Parental Advisory album, its a bit confusing.
Its a good album to think about purchasing if you're a fan of Korn. None of the songs are what I would consider rare, exactly. When I think of rare I think of songs that might not have made it on an album but are performed live possibly so not everyone has had a chance to hear them. I also prefer live albums that are from one venue as opposed to multiple so that you get that full experience as opposed to a slapshot of not only multiple venues but also of times. Obviously a cash-in from Epic, Korn's last production company (which also makes sense that this wasn't a lauded release from their website), it's above average but I expected more.
Free Music Review: Not bad. Hit: 4 Stars
While not the greatest live and/or rare compilation ever made, it is slightly better than many are giving it credit for. Rare doesn't necessarily mean stuff you can't get anymore/anywhere else/out of print whatever. Just because its on the soundtrack to some crappy movie doesn't mean its not rare. Its just the idea that its a couple of rare things on one Korn cd instead of buying all this other stuff. Like a crappy soundtrack you're never going to listen to again but only bought for one song. Me, I'd rather just buy this. And the Earache my eye is an extended version.. not the same one that appears on Follow The Leader. Let's get that one straight right now. The live stuff is incredible (especially the live version of Another Brick In The Wall that destroys the album version) except for two things. Firstly, the edited version of Right Now (while musically phenomenal) is unnecessary and makes them sound weak hearing JD say 'shut up, shut up I'll bust you up' and then 'I know I hate you' at the end instead of what he actually says. For anyone who knows the actual song.. ya that ruins it quite a bit and just comes across lame. I can ignore this one flaw on an otherwise pretty good album. The other thing is they didn't need to put the cover of Metallica's One on here. I guess its cool that its on it's own track instead of at the end of another but.. once you've heard this cover a few times there's not much too it anyway. A couple of minor things that separate this good compilation from being great. And yeah they really could have put more on here but it is what it is (and doesn't suck). If you're a completist needing rare tracks and don't already have whatever soundtrack Proud is off of or if you wanna hear some good live music (where Korn is usually best anyway) its worth picking up (and skipping over Right Now). You never know, if enough people buy this cd maybe they will release more rare Korn
