I'M SICK OF SEEING THAT NOBODY HAS WROTE A ADEQUATE REVIEW OF TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR SO I'M GOING TO DO IT SOME JUSTICE, COMING FROM A SOPHISTICATED KORN ENTHUSIASIST, I bought this album right when it came out. Ok, maybe not the all-time best of the Korn albums, but definitely a welcome addition to the growing Korn empire, it really has stylistically a little touch of all the preceding albums. This album explores some new territory, it seems like Jonathan focuses the attention on relationships, and the darker nuances of tension between lovers. With songs like Counting on Me, I Did My Time, Right Now and When Will This End, Korn sets this album apart from the preceding five albums by specifically addressing inter-relations within oneself and ones partner. It is in this album that Jonathan seems to have an over-arching theme throughout the album, much unlike the preceding album Untouchables where Korn's creativity and artistic skills blossom into one of the most highly financed and well produced albums of the early 2000's. A break down of the songs:
Right Now: B+, most resembles Ball Tongue off the self-titled album. This song integrates some of the early days aggressiveness with some of the showy highly produced musicianship of the Untouchables.
Break Some Off A+, no song ever produced in rock is more hard then this track, singly the most aggressive and brutal song ever produced by Korn, the quintessential center-piece of the entire album, quite possibly the most overlooked Korn song and the most developed and hard-edged, most resembled by Korn's underground work like Sean Olson, Camel Song or Ty Jonathan Down. This song cutt's deep into the broken heart, and cathartically makes the darkest emotion beautiful. I can't praise Jonathan Davis enough for this beautiful and powerful song, God has gave that man a gift, I hope he makes more like it cause its like nothing Korn has ever done and it's a song I play again and again, WOW!, awesome chorus, awesome verses, best bridge ever.
Counting on Me: B, most resembles the format of a Untouchables song, verse chorus x3, verse chorus, bridge, chorus x3. This song is experimental much like Untouchable material is, so I don't know where people are coming from saying Korn went back to their roots, b.s. to me, and this song proves they haven't. This song has something special about it, worth the price of admission alone, it could have been a good single.
Here it Comes Again: C-, most resembles Make Believe off Untouchables. The only reason I give it the C-, is because the bridge is unimpressive and the end song is very un-climatic . This song opens up with very good verses and flops at the end, sounding too fake, like Jonathan's voice is recorded and played, over recorded guitars and recorded drums, it just doesn't sound raw, too much studio gizmos and stuff, too produced, lacking verse and a strong enough bridge, furthermore the worst flaw is the chorus is too dragged out it feels like you have to work to reach the verses.
Deep Inside: C, no wonder its right after Here it Comes Again, same flaws. Same formula, good Korn but definitely not any better then Here it Comes Again, if anything it beats the chorus and bridge slightly, but not by much. You really have to put yourself in the mood for this song, this song won't put you in the mood like other Korn songs.
I Did My Time: A, this song most closely resembles Issues style Korn. As opposed to the more upbeat mood of Untouchables, this has the pitch black of Issues lingering all over it with its depressed regretful, chorus and smashing hard bridge with Jonathan yelling I Did My Time, right as the guitars collide with a hit single caliber finish. This song, overshadows Here To Stay, and therefore gives Take a Look in the Mirror a unique and darker tone, far beyond Untouchables achieved.
Everything I've Known: B, Whoever says Korn went back to their roots again, THIS SONG RESEMBLES NO SONG KORN HAS DONE!!!, it ain't untouchables style nor issues, its experimental. I can't say I really really dig it, its not dark or hard-edge enough, more emotional, something about it, says Jonathan is trying to sing with a positive message, it always occurred to me that Korn is able to deliver positive messages without resorting to singing like this possibly Welch has something to do with this?, I think Korn's positive messages don't come from the lyrical content but more so the feeling of being able to take all the dark feelings within you and turn them into something...... to know you can use your dark-side and turn it into something else,... something incredible like Korn has done throughout the years.
Play Me: B, kind of like Life is Peachy and Follow the Leader reintroducing some rap talent. Ice Cube definitely is not out-shined here, neither is Chino Moreno. Jonathan seems to not play a big enough role in the song, like days of old where they are singing back and forth, Children of the Korn and Wicked. Good song however no where close to Chino or Ice Cube ones, Korn should get someone bigger than NAS, god knows they can.
Alive: A, classic Korn, outstanding remake. Older song dating back since the early days of Korn, definitely fits in with the album, should have been a single, I don't know why this song hasn't gotten more attention. It's like a fusion of self-titled and Issues instrumental, raw but produced with the glean of the new-era Korn. I'm actually curious to see them re-make some of their self-titled and peachy songs, I wish they'd bring out some un-recorded songs and put them to record, like this...some of Korn's best songs are not on record.
Let's Do This Now: B+, closely resembles Wake Up Hate on Untouchables. A sing along if you will....this one packs a punch because its sound is so experimental and Jonathan makes the chorus rhyme, Mercy I cannot allow, through your face my fist will plow, let's do this now. Seems fast paced, outstanding bridge, and bagpipe opener, ties together a lot of style from Untouchables, Issues and Korn.
I'm Done: B, experimental resembling a mix of Untouchables meets Issues. Only problem Bridge is a little to soft.
Ya'll Want a Single A-, the third hit single when so many other tracks could have been the third single, resembles Follow the Leader meets Untouchables, very hard hitting and fast pace, like in your face Follow the Leader, but also musical with slower verse and bridge qualities like that of Untouchables, probably one of the best concoctions Korn has done. Very satisfying too get raw fast pace Korn again.
When Will This End A, certainly overshadows No Ones There, from the preceding album. Is a mix of Follow the Leader and Issues style. Very good very and very good bridge, fast pace and raw, somewhat slower in some sequences, but a good hybrid Korn song, which completes the album with a bang.
One C, quality wise it would have been better in the studio, kind of a party favor, but hey it a free track courtesy of Korn.
Conclusion, I give the album a A, barely though, but for the expectations I had for it, it went a little further then I was expecting, I hope this review is read and given credit for being helpful, I know some Korn fans out there need someone to tell it like it is and I hope I've done that.
