Free Music Review: Classic Metal From Krokus

This compilation from Swiss metal group Krokus came out in 2000 with remastered sound. It's a pretty good summary of their best songs from their eighties period. Lead guitarist Fernando Von Arb is quite underrated, playing tons of cool leads in each song! Marc Storace (he is from the island of Malta actually) sings in a raspy voice typical in metal and some of their songs sound a lot like AC/DC, but it's good nonetheless!
However, neither Von Arb nor Stoarce were in the band from the beginning. The two founding members that made it to the eighties phase were Tommy Kiefer (rhythm guitar) who played from the band's 1976 self-titled debut (on lead guitar here) until 1981's _Hardware_ and bassist Chris Von Rohr who also played on the 1976 debut (but on drums instead) and left after the 1983 album _Headhunter_ to return a few years later. Lead guitarist Von Arb joined in 1977 in time for the band's second album _To You All_ with Von Rohr switching from drums to vocals until Storace arrived for the 1980 fourth album _Metal Rendez-vous_.

Their cover of Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "Stayed Awake All Night" is excellent. They play it just like the original on the verse and chorus but they added a psychedelic mid-section with some atmospheric chords which sound great! Listen to the great mixolydian licks towards the end from Fernando, and speaking of mixolydian licks, who can forget the great lead guitar on "American Woman"? Not me!
But this is not all about covers, just listen to the fast-paced song "Headhunter". One of their best! There's an excellent ballad in "Screaming In The Night" that also happens to be one of the band's biggest hits. Tracks like "Playin' The Outlaw" and "Bad Boys-Rag Dolls" may sound similar to AC/DC but they rock!
If you like 80's metal, then you should try out this band from Switzerland. I'm pretty sure you'll like them! The downside to this compilation is the fact that some great songs were left out like the ballad "Streamer", or rockers like "To The Top", "Rock City", or some of my favorites from the band's first three albums would have been nice: "No Way", "Insalata Mysta", "Just Like Everyday", "Highway Song", "Move It On", "Festival", "Killer", "Werewolf", "Bye Bye Baby" and "Rock Me, Rock You".
