Free Music Review: "Stampede" is one of their best

When "Stampede" appeared in 1990, few were paying attention. Krokus started out as a fairly interesting progressive hard rock outfit in the '70's but only achieved international fame after retooling their lineup and style to fit the early '80's quasi-traditional-pop-metal landscape. But the band saw their originality was a drawback, and quickly began to ape other bands. The results were, by 1988, devastating; Krokus had descended into hair metal anonymity and were no longer even considered by the serious rock fans. Finally, leader Fernando van Orb tried to rectify the situation by doing a much needed lineup overhaul and attempting to re-establish Krokus as a band with their own unique sound and vision. Thats what "Stampede" was all about, an honest effort to move forward a band that was considered an also-ran. And it works, unbelievably well, at least musically. This has to be the best album Krokus had yet released and while it made a slight ripple of interest in Europe, the damage that had been done in the mid to late '80's was far too severe to be overcome, and sadly the new and improved Krokus was met with either indifference or solid negativity everywhere else.
Their next album "To Rock Or Not To Be" was an almost total retreat, with Fernando letting back in several old members who had no concept of what rock was about in the new decade and just too willing to pick up where the band had left off in the prior one. True, the hair metal aspect is mostly gone, but it's not replaced by anything approaching originality.
This is a jarring set, with one great album paired with a poor one, but if you can ignore the second disc, "Stampede" is well worth your attention. And Krokus would, in 1999, again rejigger the lineup and would again reach greatness with the almost completely overlooked but artistically brilliant "Round 13" album. "Stampede" and "Round 13" are the very best of Krokus; get those two, their debut "Krokus" and a compilation for all the Krokus you'll ever need.

KROKUS were formed and debuted on New Years Eve 1975 in SWITZERLAND. During the 80's they released numerous Gold & Platinum selling albums and by the early 80's they had achieved 'stadium' status regularly selling out 20,000 seaters around the world having extensively in the USA, Canada, South America and Europe. Then came 1983 and the million selling 'Headhunter' album which sold in excess on one million units alone in USA. That same year they played to 80,000 at a festival in Chile which along with the concert at The Cotton Bowl in Dallas, USA during 1986 they co headlined with VAN HALEN. In the late 80's the band regrouped after a lengthy break and in 1990 'Stampede' was released to much acclaim and success. This was followed in 1994 with 'To Rock Or Not To Be' both of which are included on this 2CD set with two bonus tracks from the maxi single release 'You Ain't Seen Nothin Yet'.
