Free Music Review: The Princess of Pop is back with a..... BANG!
Hit: 5 Stars

Madonna is the undeniable Queen of pop, but Kylie deserves the runner up title of Princess of Pop. She may never achieve that cult status and worldwide success that Madonna has, but this album should easily establish her as the second best. Kylie is now in her 13th year of having massive hits so is she more than just a one hit wonder. US success has eluded her (apart from the novelty hit "The Locomotion" back in 1988) but this album might just be the right formula to break the US market.

Gone are the alternative attempts of the excellent but commercial failure "Impossible Princess". On this album Kylie is back to her pop roots with a vengeance. The opening track, "Spinning Around", is pure pop music at its best and can rival any of Madonna's recent dance hits. It has a retro 70s feel to it, but the beat is undeniably 2000 dance music. Co written by Paula Abdul, and with one of the hottest videos around, this deserves to become a massive hit in the US, just like it was in Europe. "On a night like this", "Disco down" and "Please stay" are excellent dance tracks that can fill the dance floor at any club, or party. "Please stay" has an interesting flamenco guitar arrangement that sets it apart from the rest of the dance tracks on this album. "Light years" is a Euro trance anthem that sounds as if it were inspired by Madonna's "Ray of light" album. "Under the influence of love" is a great cover of the Barry white classic and the Robbie Williams penned "Your disco needs you" is hands down the gayest song ever written, with a Pet Shop Boys meet the Village People beat and chorus that is guaranteed to become a classic dance hit. Robbie also co-wrote the song "Kids", where the two of them join forces for a funky duet.

There are a couple of ill conceived ideas, like the kitschy "Love boat" and the Austin Powers/60s tribute "My cookachoo", but the rest of the 15 tracks more than make up for it. Look out for the hidden track "Password", an excellent pop/dance song that should be considered as a single. To access it you have to go to the beginning of the first track and hold down the rewind button on your cd player.

Kylie's voice never sounded better, and with some luck and with some good promotion this could be her long awaited US breakthrough. If you have never heard Kylie's work, this is an excellent introduction to her amazing talent. If you are a Madonna fan, then you will love this album. If you like great pop/dance music, then look no further. After you purchase Madonna's brilliant "Music" then you should consider Kylie's "Light years".

Free Music Review: Light Years ahead of herself
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll get right to the chase and review each song:

Spinning Around: A good opener, catchy. Kylie's big hit from this album, for good reason too. Grade: A+

On A Night Like This: The other huge hit, and also for good reason. Musically and lyrically beautiful. Kylie's sensuous whispering throughout the song is delightful. Grade: A+

So Now Goodbye: Full chorus-line song. Fun to hear and sing along to. Grade: A

Disco Down: This song blew me away. It actually makes me want to get up and dance, which never happens! Grade: A+

Loveboat: The perfect "cruise" song. Full chorus, strings, this song has everything. I feel like I'm there. Grade: A+

Koocachoo: The verses of this song are pretty toned-down and quiet, and the chorus is beautiful. The sogn has a good groove to it. Grade: A+

Your Disco Needs You: Sounds like it came straight out of Cabaret or Moulin Rouge. 'Nuff said. Grade: A

Please Stay: Sounds similar to Your Love from Fever. The Spanish guitar in it is beautiful, and Kylie sounds as sensuous and lovely as ever. Grade: A+

Bittersweet Goodbye: The first time you hear this, you will stop and check to make sure this is the same CD. It's a quiet, fully-orchestrated ballad that fully shows off just how much of a remarkable talent Kylie really is.

Butterfly: This would have been a great single. It's acid rock and disco together at last. Grade: A+

Under The Influence Of Love: A poppy, bubbly song that is fun to sing along to, but it's one of the weaker songs on the album. Grade: A-

I'm So High: It's like the aftermath of Loveboat. It sounds like a Caribbean sunset. I love it. Grade: A+

Kids: A hard-rock duet with Robbie Williams. Kylie takes a step back and lets Robbie have the potlight mostly here, but it's still a great song. Grade: A

Light Years: The best album-closer I've ever heard. Kylie takes the role of a flight attendant and takes you on a plane trip you wish was like real plane trips. The chorus is beautiful. Close your eyes and sing along. Grade: A+

Standout tracks: On A Night Like This, Disco Down, Loveboat, Bittersweet Goodbye, Light Years

Free Music Review: Light Years Review:
Hit: 5 Stars

This CD is without question the best CD I have heard thus far for not only 2000,but also now in 2001 as well. This CD deserves the CD of the year award if there was such a thing. It's no wonder why Kylie is my favorite female vocalist of all time as all of her albums and CD's are very much consistent. This makes up for her 1993 self titled CD when she came out on the Deconstruction label.Let's all hope as great a CD Light Years is that every other CD here on in turns out just as great as this CD,as I'm sure it will. There are some great Bubblegum songs as usual on here, like the great Barry White cover of "Under The Influence Of Love" & "I'm So High" which just so happens to be two of my favorite songs on here, along with the very catchy "Loveboat" which also has that Bubblegum style to it which Kylie is best known for.

Saving one of the best songs on the CD for last, the title track "Light Years" heads back into the 80's New Wave vein with a load of Synthpop unlike any other Kylie Minogue song throughout her whole career, and I love this song.Kylie should do more songs like this in the future,as it is an excellent song.It has shades of "Devo" where the synthesizers come in and out of the song.I can just picture Devo doing a song like this, more than I can Kylie, but Kylie in the 80's was inspired by alot of New Wave/Synthpop music due to Stock Aitken Waterman so I'm not really all that surprised when I hear her do a song like "Light Years" in the style it is in. Kylie is inded a Bubblegum Pop icon.Definately not a Disco one.

Free Music Review: The comeback started here
Hit: 5 Stars

Kylie had considerable success in Britain and Australia during the late eighties and early nineties but then had a few years when she was less successful commercially although her music from that period was interesting. With this album, Kylie was back in a big way although American success had to wait a bit longer. The overall sound is upbeat with a strong disco beat, occasionally reminiscent of the seventies disco craze but very much an album of the new millennium.

The first single from the album, Spinning around, returned Kylie to the top of the British charts. It became her fifth UK number one - ten and half years after her previous UK number one and almost six years after her previous UK number two. Suddenly, the public generally (not just Kylie's fans) wanted her music again.

The next two singles (On a night like this, Kids) both made number two in the UK, with the latter being a duet with Robbie Williams. The final single from the album (Please stay) also made the UK top ten. Whether Your disco needs you (apparently the preferred choice by Kylie's fans) would have been a bigger hit than Please stay, nobody will ever know but I rather doubt it - Please stay is a stronger song, more likely to appeal to wider public. There are many other great songs here. I particularly like Bittersweet goodbye, a ballad that provides a contrast with the dance music that dominates this album.

This is an outstanding album from Kylie and it's not difficult to see why the public suddenly got interested in her music again when it was released.

Free Music Review: Kylie's big comeback
Hit: 5 Stars

If "Fever" was Kylie's comeback album in North America, "Light Years" was her comeback album in the rest of the world.

A lighter, more European-feeling, and more whimsical outing, this CD was my re-introduction to the Aussie ingenue. Sure, I had heard that she was still making music, and I think rumors of the "Impossible Princess" album's existence had reached my ears a time or two, but for all practical purposes Kylie had been absent from my mind (and the Canadian charts) since the glory days of 1988, when "The Locomotion" received heavy rotational airplay. When I noticed the striking cover of Light Years at the record store, I decided on the spur of the moment to pick the CD up.

Needless to say, I was not disappointed. "Light Years" is a great album. In fact, after listening to its tracks several times, I found myself mentally wondering why Kylie wasn't popular anymore. The songs on "Light Years" sounded like hits (and, in fact, there were several huge international chart-toppers on the disc, including "On A Night Like This" and "Spinning Around"). When "Fever" appeared two years later and caught on in the USA and Canada, it was a validation of the stylistic directions Kylie had moved in on Light Years.

Basically, if you enjoy light, disco-suffused dance and pop, "Light Years" is right up your alley. There's only one truly bad song on the CD, the ill-advised duet with Robbie Williams, "Kids".

This CD will impress you - take it to the bank. Five stars!
