Free Music Review: The lead singer should have been fired during first rehearsal

These dark laidback heavy grooves are awesome, as are the guitar skills of Josh Homme. But the vocals are killing what could have been an absolute great record. John Garcia sounds like a bad caricature of a rock star when he opens up full throttle. The mellow singing is o.k. but not more than that, it misses range, personality and depth. It's all a bit bleak and stereotypical.
I can imagine that Josh Homme sometimes must have thought: "Oh man, I'm here playing these awesome grooves, but I might as well take over the singing too, because John is killing it'.
Later Joshua kinda took over the vocals by forming Queens of the stone age, a band which has currently a greater range and much broader musical palette than Kyuss ever had. Not hard to conclude seeing the ten or so years of evolution that separate the two bands.
But still a very enjoyable record.
