Free Music Notes for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Free Music Review: Another Golden Goldenthal Score!!

Let me start off by saying that Elliot Goldenthal's music is one the the most unique, creative, and beautiful music I have ever heard. The best word that I can describe it has to be "Neo-Gothic". Final Fantasy is another one of his works of art.
1. The Spirit Within throws you into the strange, dark, fantasy world and is perfect for the the first track to get you going into those worlds.
2. Race to Old New York is a fast paced, mostly stringed work. You can just imagine a space ship flying at low altitudes over barren landscapes as you hear it.
3. The Phantom Plains starts out quiet but comes to a great climax with a strong cue of a high brass note, kind of a trade mark for Goldenthal.
4. Code Red begins with tremolo strings and goes into a nicely paced rythum perfect for suspense.
5. The Kiss, what a beautiful piece of music. Goldenthal's love themes are always beautiful, and this one goes close to the top (my preference being Alien 3's Adagio). The piano adds such a delicate feel and the voice is both haunting and soothing.
6. Entrada has a suspenseful feel to it and is a very short track.
7. Toccata and Dreamscapes has some of the best avant-garde dissonant tones and techniques in it. The piece has some of Goldenthal's trademarks in it; such as the 'growl' made by a low brass instrument (probably electronic), the low stacatto brass notes, and the 'whale-moan' of a french horn or trombone. I also recognized that some stuff was borrowed from George Crumb's "A Haunted Landscape", but it goes perfect with the piece and creates a truely nightmarish experience. Definetly one of the standout tracks
8. Music for Dialogues, just like it sounds. Mostly background music, as well as Entrada.
9. Winged Serpent has a sad and dramatic feel to it. Feels as if a horrible trajedy is occuring. Great choral work in this track as well as a neat drum beat at the end, the soldier theme.
10. The Zeus Cannon is almost the same as Winged Serpent, but pushes it up to highest dramatic levels.
11. Flight to the Wasteland has a magical feel to it with those sweeping chords (I love them but im not dure what kind of chords they are), a Goldenthal trademark. Sets a wonderous mood that you are in another world.
12. A Child Recalled, this is my favorite track. The piano adds a earthly feel, not a space-age kind of feel. Starts out similar to The Kiss but goes into a very melancholy tune. It's heartbreaking to listen to, especially if you know what Aki talks about in this scene. Some say the love theme is better, but I prefer this theme, much more touching.
13. The Eighth Spirit, neat choral music adds a slightly dramatic, magical touch.
14. Dead Rain, this begins with fast paced techno sound but then goes into the tragic orchestra. Signifying the soldiers having their souls ripped out of them.
15. Blue Light starts quiet but builds to a dramatic blast that even the microphones shuddered at at one point of this track. It suddenly fades to those marvelous chords again only to build up again to a high dramatic point.
16. Adagio and Transfiguration plays the love theme to a very touching point that could make you cry. A great crescendo of the orchestra falls inot place and sounds very much like Gustav Holst or maybe Strauss. It then stops and settles down. Those flutes that appeared in the first track are very beautiful.
17. The Dream Within is a very good song. Lara Fabian's is excellant. One person did point out, however, that this song sounds like "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge, but i'm not too sure about that. Just sit back and let this song take you away. Feels like you could fly in the air to this song.
18. Spirit Dreams Inside. I don't know why they put this one on. Like "Interview With the Vampire", the last track is some rock song that has almost no relationship to the soundtrack. I totally disagree with this track. You could get used to it, but it breaks the fluidity of the soundtrack like a rock thrown in a still pond.
Overall, this is another golden Goldenthal Soundtrack. I can't wait to hear the next Final Fantasy movie if he does it!
