Free Music Review: Evanescence who?
Hit: 5 Stars

Someone literally needs to march their ass to Times Square, New York; barge into the MTV building; and beat everyone up to a pulp. Listen, I'm not saying this to be morbid, but MTV has completely ruined music for many innocent people, and for that, they should all have to suffer a terrible price. Their are actually people who think Lacuna Coil is an Evanescence rip-off! Look, the Coil have released four outstanding albums, while Evanescence has released one mediocre record, and gotten two videos on MTV. But, alas, LC sounds NOTHING like Evanescence, and since this review is for them, I'll try to focus myself a little more for the remainder of it.

First off, this is the Coil's fourth album! While they've all impressed, Comalies expands on the band's ability to craft beautiful music while at the same time maintaining teamwork and dedication to their loyal fanbase. That's not to say that this is the best LC album, that's ultimately up to the listener, but it IS a step in the right direction. The sound on here has expanded beyond the melodic heaviness of Unleashed Memories, and is obviously very different from In a Reverie. Actually, overall, this album has some moments that are actually quite heavier than the aforementioned titles, and moments that are very mellow and pleasing to the ears. What obviously stands out among the record is Cristina Scabbia's angelic and flexible voice, and her ability to switch off and on between a range of high and low voices (just listen to "Heaven's A Lie" for confirmation). She puts Amy Lee (Evanescence) to shame, that's definite. The male vocalist you hear is Andrea Ferro. A lot of people have criticized his voice but I think it's great. He captures a lot of emotions and carries them throughout each song, while at the same time managing to perform distinct and sharp growls on songs like "Angel's Punishment" (also listen to "My Wings" from In a Reverie). Adding to this, Marco Coti Zelati constructs wonderful bass licks that are surprisingly audible, and drummer Cristiano Mozatti completes the rhythm section, offering a variety of percussion tempos and sounds. But if there's one thing that I'd complain about, it's the guitar work. It's mostly just riffs that sound alike on each song, and are often drowned out by Cristina and Andrea. But I have to give both guitarists credit for their acoustic performance on the short track "Aeon", it sounds beautiful. To complete my review, even though I probably shouldn't, I'm going to review each song, one by one.

SWAMPED - This is a great opener, as it sets the mood for the album. Just hearing Cristina's voice in the chorus makes me want to listen to it again and again. 5/5

HEAVEN'S A LIE - The single off of the album. It took a few listens for me to catch on, but once I did, I was charmed by Cristina's low-key vocals. 5/5

DAYLIGHT DANCER - If I hadn't heard a clip of this track, I probably wouldn't have bought this album. This is probably my favorite tune. The keyboard work may seem corny, but it grew on me. Compliments to Andrea for getting the song to a good start and especially Cristina who brings some entrancing vocals to the table. 5.5/5

HUMANE - Out of all the songs on the album, this one took the longest to grow on me. It's a bit slower than the others, but it's still remarkable, especially the second half, where Cristina demonstrates some impressive vocal dynamics. 5/5

SELF DECEPTION - This song sounds a little more pop-influenced, but it adds some much-welcomed diversity into the album. 5/5

AEON - The only song that doesn't deserve a 5. It's good, but very short, and I can't help but thinking of it as a filler track, despite the breathtaking acoustic arrangements. 3/5

TIGHT ROPE - Starting off with a nice synthesizer intro, and then evolving into some heavy verses, followed by an angelic chorus, with the addition of some well-written lyrics, there's not enough words I can use to describe this masterpiece. 5.5/5

THE GHOST WOMAN & THE HUNTER - Another slow tune, but after the ferocity of "Tight Rope", I was welcoming it with open arms. 5/5

UNSPOKEN - This is Cristina's track. She performs ALL vocals on the song, elevating it to different heights until it all comes together for a spine-chilling chorus. 5.5/5

ENTWINED - Once again, the band slows things down, giving the listener the opportunity to concentrate on the beauty of the music. 5/5

THE PROPHET SAID - Most of the vocals are performed by Andre, which may turn off some people, but I still loved it. He gets his moments to show off his talent while Cristina sits in the background for the first half of the song. 5/5

ANGEL'S PUNISHMENT - Overall, this has got to be the heaviest song on the record. Just listen to Andrea's growling on the chorus and you'll know what I mean. During the first and second verse, Cristina speaks the lyrics in a rhythmic fashion, often saying words like "war" and "destruction", and putting emphasis on the lyrics. 5.5/5

COMALIES - What a wonderful way to close a great album. While some of the lyrics are sung in Italian, it's so hard not to feel the emotions caught in this song. But my favorite part has to be the ending acoustics, providing a brilliant closure to the album.
5/5

So, out of thirteen songs, only one recieved less than a five-star rating from me. Ultimately, it's YOUR decision whether you like this or not, but I truly mean everything I say, so consider this review in the future, and listen to a band with REAL talent that isn't MTV-manufactured.
