Free Music Notes for Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in IndiaFree Music Review: A.R. Rahman at his mellifluous best Hit: 5 Stars
Most Indian films are musicals. Music is an essential part of the Indian psyche. Film directors have adopted two polar strategies as far as Film music is concerned. Either weave the scores into the narration and screenplay or isolate them from the story altogether.I personally prefer the former. In the musical score for "Lagaan" A.R. Rehman works in total harmony with the narration of Ashutosh Gowrikar. The first piece "Ghannan Ghannan" symbolises the celebration of the arrival of the monsoon. It invokes the spirit of joy in you. "Mitva" is a call for action and is reflected in the use of the percussions in the score. " Radha Kaise Na Jale" is playful and conveys the mood of the possessive female and the playful male and is enchanting. "O re Gori" is soft and romatic and exudes passion and "O Palanhari" is appropriately serene. Udit Narayan, Shaan, Alka Yagnik, Vasundhara Das and Lata are excellent in their renderings but Asha in "Radha Kaise Na jale" continues to bedazzle. The group song with A.R.Rahman as the lead singer is average. A.R. Rahman is fresh and brilliant and refreshingly original in his music direction but I think he should stop singing.

"Lagaan," is translated as "tax." The movie, one of Bollywood's more cohesive offerings, is loosely based on fact. The bloody awful British administrator of a draught stricken region offers to lift a tax increase, and, in fact, all taxes if a particular village can field a cricket team that beats the local British team. No spoilers, but it is a feel good movie. Clocking in at over three hours, with about an hour dedicated to the cricket match, it can seem daunting, but it clips right along. Bollywood movies almost always contain songs and dances that stop the plot. "Lagaan," provides the songs and dances but, wonder to behold, they forward and underscore the plot, and are greatly entertaining to boot. Even without knowing the story, or the conventions of Bollywood, the soundtrack stands on its own as a terrific collection of songs. Some are in period, some aren't, but it doesn't matter. Production values are impeccable, the tunes are textured, catchy, and emotionally layered, and not understanding Hindi doesn't matter a whit. My only complaint is it's too short. But even that doesn't stand in the way as the album bears consecutive and repeated listening.
Free Music Review: Brilliant! Hit: 5 Stars
Lagaan, the Oscar-nominated film boasts another masterpiece soundtrack from the two-time Oscar winning maestro A.R.Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire). Look out how intelligently he blends both modern and Western sounds with classical Hindustani sound. It is wonderful, it is brilliant, it is a genius's work. Lagaan...Once Upon A Time is one of A.R.Rahman's best instrumental theme pieces (THE BEST is "Theme Music" from Earth 1947). And O Paalanhaare is one of his best religious "bhajjan" based songs, a beautiful and haunting song I must say. My personal favorite is Chale Chalo, it is so energetic, so up-beat. O Rey Chhori is a soothing and soulful love song with some great vocals and awesome blend with Western music. Mitwa is melodious and have this rural feeling. Ghanan Ghanan is a beautiful "rain song" with some ten or more singers behind the mic. To put it short, if you love Bollywood music, or if you liked Slumdog Millionaire's music, this album is gonna rock you. By the way if you like this must check the best of A.R.Rahman: Dil Se, Bombay, Roja, Taal, Rangeela, Saathiya, Dehli 6.
Free Music Review: Quality Bollywood Soundtrack Hit: 5 Stars
Even without seeing this amazing film, you can appreciate the music. Many Bollywood soundtracks are unoriginal or make a botched attempt to mix Western esthetics (offensive synthesizers etc) with traditional Indian elements, but this soundtrack both defies convention and is loaded with songs that are at the same time modern and 100% Indian. Fabulous percussion parts show how traditional Indian rhythms can totally groove, and the slow songs bring you to tears even when you can't understand the words (though watching the movie will help those of us who don't speak Hindi). I loved the music so much after seeing the film without subtitles in India that I bought this soundtrack there; now that I've just seen the film w/ subtitles I can say that for most of the songs, the lyrics are great, too. One song is kind of marred by a horrid, cheesy English-language interlude, but otherwise it's all powerful, wonderful music. Good stuff. Check it out and you won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: Possibly Unknown to most, but Beautiful to the ones who do Hit: 5 Stars
The most beautiful music I have heard in the longest time. I may be hearing-impaired, but this music sings flawlessly to my eardrums. I turn the music up so loudly, my neighbor would pound on my door to keep it down! I absolutely love "Waltz for a Romance". I cried when I first heard it and watched it on film. Even with Elizabeth, the British woman, singing alongside the two of them, it is a beautiful song. In fact, putting her in the mix of the song only made it better. And no, I am not Hindi. I am an ordinary American who just happens to love the film and the music. So, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. This is an awesome soundtrack and very well-deserved to listen to! It is a perfect buy at a great price! I would pay more for this than just [$$]. Go see the movie too. You won't regret it, except for those who are really sad people and really don't care about the others, of course. heh.
