Free Music Review: Amazing guitarists.....

Well the first thing anyone reviewing this cd has to mention is the guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler who are just awesome, they are extremely talented and are way better than almost all guitarists around these days. They solos, they play great riffs and they have great tech and rhythm sections. The guitars are very Slayer/Meshuggah influenced expecially the driving Meshuggah-like rhythms behind the solo in the title track or the awesome breakdown in Ruin among others. The drummer is fairly unremarkable but this is coming from someone with very high standards. He is pretty good thats for sure though. Bass is hard to hear on this cd so i wont rate it, it only comes out as a constant rumble in the background (which is probably all it is!) so it wouldn't be fair.
Well I've heard the first cd but i don't own it yet and there are improvements, many improvements but a few gripes. The vocals aren't fantastic, on New American Gospel, Randy Blythe screamed really well, he was really hardcore. Here he sounds like he is just saying the vocals, which is weird because it sounds like he's growling kind of. It's really hard to explain. I think it is a growl but very high pitched. On the bright side though, the production is much better but still keeps a raw side to it, the production on the first one was just crap, it's not cool it doesn't make me think they are any better than they actually are! (*stares at black metal cds menacingly wondering what obsesses them into using crappy production*). They guitar parts are more technical as well.
The songs are great, they don't get boring but they aren't as heavy as people say. I mean I used to think these guys were heavy a long time ago when I first heard 11th Hour, I think I still listened to crap back then though, I can imagine how heavy nu-metal or thrash fans would think this is, no offence but it just ain't heavy. Ruin, 11th Hour amongst others stand out off the top of my head.
I couldn't say this fully deserved Album of the Year 2003, mainly because I haven't heard much of the popular TALENTED music from that year, I was still digging into the depths of old Death Metal cds at the time i think, lol :). But this is bloody good I tell ya! If you're a musician, you will really be able to appreciate the guitarists, if not, they riffs sound really cool so you would like it anyway.
This doesn't really appeal to a particular genre of fans but I suppose you could call this Metalcore. Overall it's something you need to check out, they are very popular and deserve to be so don't be afraid to fork out a few dollars for it! :D
