Free Music Review: More Godliness from L.O.G.
Hit: 5 Stars

Lamb of God's fifth album proper, 2009's "Wrath," continues down a similar path as to what was heard on its predecessor, 2006's "Sacrament," in that it brings back some of that effort's experimental elements. It has well-textured musical arrangements, occasional moments of restraint, and overall, is substantially more melodic, progressive, groove-oriented, and black metal-influenced than 2000's "New American Gospel," 2003's "As the Palaces Burn," and 2004's "Ashes of the Wake." However, L.O.G. have not made the same album twice, and they aren't about to start now. Thus, "Wrath" finds the band expanding on their songwriting and dynamic range even further while also bringing back the cutthroat tempos, political lyrics, and foaming-at-the-mouth anger of their earlier material. This is the band's first conceptual piece, too (its intelligent subject matter is inspired by the story of the ten plagues from the book of Exodus in The Bible). It also marks the inclusion of a new producer (Josh Wilbur, who delivers a clear and articulate sound). And finally, this just in: There is proof that Lamb of God actually have a bassist! The bass work of John Campbell (who was rarely audible up until now) really helps to thoroughly fill the bottom-end by laying down both melodic bass lines and heavy, guttural bass rumbles.

Even with an increased melodic sensibility, monstrous guitar riffage, excellent solos, tight and precise drumming, meaty bass fills, huge grooves, awesomely visceral growls, freaky, lung-stretching shrieks, and chunky breakdowns are mostly the name of the game this time around. The end result is an album that sounds simultaneously more dangerous and more well-textured and rich-sounding record than its predecessor. Instrumental opener "The Passing" is a positively breathtaking prog-rock soundscape that would not be mismatched coming off of, say, an Agalloch or Katatonia outing. But soon thereafter, the listener is slammed like a brick wall into "In Your Words," a very headbangable and number with fiery guitar work, catchy vocal patterns, and rhythmic, pounding rhythms. Indeed, this one should instantly become a fan favourite, and a staple of live shows. Surprisingly, though, it concludes with a slow break and docile progressive outro. In "Set To Fail," Randy delivers an impassioned, black metal-lite vocal performance long on sustained shrieks, thus helping to make this fist-pumper even more commanding and memorable. These three beginning tracks establish a relatively mid-tempo pace/mood, but it is immediately blown wide-open by song number four. "Contractor" is a positively breakneck death-tinged Eighties-style thrasher with dizzying, whirlwind buzzsaw picking, thunderous, jackhammer-fast drumming, technical tempo changes, and a distorted bass bottom. Lamb of God briefly lay off the gas pedal when a doomy breakdown enters the picture about midway through, and John Campbell is allowed a moment in the spotlight with an excellent bass solo (yes, you read that right!).

"Wrath" continues with "Fake Messiah," which is a much slower and more involved venture complete with skin-crawling vocals (including a creepy-to-the-bone spoken word part), and a really cool and ominous atmosphere. "Grace" has some grooving, swinging rhythms and slow-burning tempos that bring the above-mentioned "Sacrament" to mind. But that's the case only about half of the time -- the rest of the time, this is a really heavy, and hard-driving song anchored by Chris Adler's impeccable pummelling drum blasts. "Broken Sands" practically has "huge mosh-pit-anthem" written all-over it (after all, it often grooves as well as anything from Pantera's heyday!), but its groove-oriented approach is offset by "Dead Seets," a brutal, frills-free, head-down speedster propelled by gobs of blistering riffs and impeccable thrash beats; and "Everything To Nothing," with its fast, hoof-pounding beat, and chunked-up, machine gun, Slayer-esque guitar licks galore, is even more merciless. "Choke Sermon" is highlighted by an epic, memorable, technically-proficient, and totally ripping and wailing guitar solo (it's but one example of the kind that are scattered here and there throughout these forty-six minutes). Set closer "Reclamation" mostly offers some more of the same (and what you're comfortable with: punishing, dissonant heavy metal), although it does have a noteworthy beginning (a nice, placid bit of melody, and near-country/banjo-sounding guitar strums).

Admittedly, it could use a few more immediate infectious hooks and air-guitar-worthy moments, but overall, "Wrath" can easily be placed right alongside Lamb of God's best work. Plus, one can make the argument that this outing is their most accomplished, expansive, and well-rounded to date. And, if nothing else, it is at least yet another winner from L.O.G., a very enjoyable and exhilarating release, and one that is sure to rank near the top of more than a few "Best of 2009" lists come year's end.

Wrath (Deluxe) Poster

UK pressing includes two bonus tracks: 'We Die Alone' and 'Shoulder Of Your God'. 2009 album from the American Heavy Metal heads, a release inspired by and based on the 10 plagues from the book of Exodus. After the reflective Sacrament (2006), a deeply personal album that found Blythe exorcising his personal demons, Wrath turns its lyrical focus outward, and returns to more of the breakneck riffing that characterized the band s early material. A change in producers, from Machine to Josh Wilbur, was the kick in the pants that this band needed to recapture its more visceral side. On Wrath, Lamb Of God raise the Thrash bar to a new level. 13 tracks. Roadrunner.
