Free Music Review: The diva who became flesh

I understand that the word "diva" in Latin originally meant goddess, and came to refer to female singers who could capture huge audiences, stadiums even, usually with very powerful voices and larger-than-life personae.
Well Lara Fabian is often compared to those traditionally thought of as divas, the likes of Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and (to me, the largest-than-life of them all) Whitney Houston. The similarities are obvious, such as the big voice, the tremendous feminine strength combined with sensitivity.
However I find there is something incredibly different and unique about Lara Fabian, so much that I feel she should always be thought of and admired in her own right. Her persona is very down-to-earth for a diva. It never overshadows her singing, her art and her heart. I really feel her emotions from deep within, very pure, genuine and stirring. Every note is for real, never exaggerated for the sake of vocal gymnastics. Because of these, ironically, she is not likely to ever get the massive fan base that Mariah, Celine or Whitney have. So she is something of a diva for a niche.
Some critics may say her songs are platitudes, but for the diehard romantics among us - those who usually like our love songs relatively simple and uncomplicated - Lara will bring back to you the strongest, purest visions of love found/lost you ever had, without ever being naive or saccharine.
The classy, pulsating dance number "I Will Love Again" may seem cliched, lyrics-wise ("I will love again/though my heart is breaking I will love again"), but she makes the song so much her own, her delivery so strong & true, that it shakes away the cynicism from me and recaptures the purity of defiance and hope.
2 other favourite tracks for me are "Love by Grace" and "You're Not from Here". The 2 songs are reminiscent of those rainy evenings with the luminescence of streetlights shimmering in puddles, and those bittersweet meetings of lovers on the edge:

"I know you/you're not from here/You don't belong to lies and tears/The greatness of your soul/Makes me weep... just one touch of yours/ And I fly... and I fly" (Not from Here)
Just listen to Lara's voice go when she sings the word "fly". My word, it REALLY Soars. And it's a very natural soaring.. no strain in her voice whatsoever.. it just takes flight with the feelings of the song and the singer.
More shades of love and longing are found in "Adagio", a stirring piece vocally. Philosophically, "Yeliel (My Angel)" is impressive even in its forthright simplicity. "Why do I love/Why do I hate and die?"
Lara is truly a diva who reaches out to the people, as she shows in her album notes: "TO MY FANS / The discovery of music through you has been my true happiness and evolution. I hope that every second of this music will explain how much I care for you." I believe the greatest artists are those who really reach out, to Connect with individuals even in a crowd. So if it feels right, why not open your heart to her?
