Free Music Notes for Lara FabianFree Music Review: Lara is the angel of pop! Hit: 5 Stars
It's been little over a year since I first bought this CD. I enjoyed it immensely and it even became my August 2000 employee pick at my workplace at Sam Goody. Then, on 12 August 2001, PBS premiered From Lara With Love, a program consisting of a concert intercut with interviews which showcased tunes from her eponymously-titled English language debut and some of her previous foreign language albums, including Pure. It was like falling in love with her all over again. Some of the music and styles remind me of Celine Dion tunes, interesting considering how both are Canadians. "I Am Who I Am" and "You Are My Heart" are examples of this and while Celine wouldn't have trouble singing them, there's something in Lara's vocal style that places her over Dion. The thing that clinches her lead over Dion is her personal style. She is the prime example of European singers who don't care about the star system or entering the "renowned" hall of divas, as I learned during the PBS pledge break. Then again, it could be the passionate Italian in her inherited from her mother's heritage. "Love By Grace" is a Mariahesque song with the same soaring vocals but at the right level that soothes the listener, especially the chorus's of repetitive melody: "I didn't come here to leave you/I didn't come here to lose/I didn't come here believing..." When she spoke of "Yeliel (My Angel)" and how she envisioned angels not as heavenly beings with wings but that certain gentle person there to protect and love us, I suddenly realized how angelic Lara herself was! She could be anyone's angel hands down. I would definitely be proud to introduce her to my parents and they would be enchanted to meet her in return. The breakthrough dance single "I Will Love Again" is followed by the song she described as a special song, one about betrayed love and forgiveness--"Broken Vow." This song, along with "Love By Grace," highlights her vocal talents. Now THAT is the way to sing a love ballad. The more I hear it, the more I enjoy it. An Italian version of "Adagio," which I like better than the English language version, brings Lara's album full circle. Some of this album was produced by Walter Afanasieff of Mariah Carey and Celine Dion fame, and his arrangements show. With Celine Dion in temporary retirement and Mariah gradually losing the spotlight, this would be a perfect opportunity to move Lara Fabian to her proper throne as, no, not the queen of pop, but the angel of pop.

To be honest, there really wasn't much hype over Lara Fabian's English debut release, nor is there a lot of publicity at the present time. If you have heard of Lara Fabian and you aren't from Europe or Canada, you're one of the few. This is unfortunate, because Lara and her album have so much to offer. The CD enters with "Adagio", modern lyrics set to a classic 18th century ballad by the composer, Albinoni. What many are calling the highlight of the album, "Adagio" is probably the most hard-hitting song on the album, with vocals strong and high enough to scare off even Celine. Ballads like this are in abundance, and include "To Love Again", an English version of a previously released French track, and "Love By Grace", a song originally released for Wynonna Judd, but remastered and set to a different melody and orchestra and is a highlight on the album. "Part of Me" is very subtle, with a hint of saxophone blended in while "Broken Vow" features the music of a 100 piece orchestra and a piano background. "You're Not From Here", is a haunting ballad that is somewhat mysterious but get's its point across in the most dramatic way. Up-tempos include the self-empowering "I Am Who I Am", and "Till I Get Over You", produced by Sam Watters and Louis Biancanello, and of course, "I Will Love Again", a song that you will either love or hate. Mid Tempos also present are "Yeliel (My Angel)", "You Are My Heart", convincing lyrics set to adult-contempo/pop music, and "Giving Up On You", yet another song that shows Fabian's versatility. The whole album is really of a mixed genre. There is R&B, pop, rock, classical, and adult contemporary. The ballads are stunning, featuring Lara Fabian's signature vocals, what many have called a blend of Streisand and the ever-familiar CelineDion. Her voice is quite wide in range, and she proves that well in the album as she scales upwards on most of her tracks. The lyrics are about 90% of Fabian's own work, which is very impressive because these songs have an actual deep meaning to them. The songs are delivered with a true and sincere honesty, the vocals are pushed to their limit, although sometimes too far, and the music itself is good quality and surprisingly original, which makes "Lara Fabian", a refreshingly smart album for the music lover.
Free Music Review: Move Over, Celine Hit: 5 Stars
What a voice. I picked up the CD actually on a lark; browsing through the sample CDs sitting on a rack in Borders, I caught sight of Lara Fabian's debut English album, sporting a rather large sticker on the bottom right-hand corner of the album proclaimed "Lara Fabian's Voice has Stormed the World" (or something to that effect; it's been a few weeks). Two songs were recommended by the sticker: "I Will Love Again" and "Adagio". I didn't quite like "IWLA" at that time (I can listen to it over and over again now!), so I picked track number 11, "Adagio", to listen to. I was blown away. She has _such_ a voice, it rivals anything out there at the moment. My first impression was that Celine Dion had nothing on her; while Celine's voice is somewhat high-pitched and shrill, Lara's is a fine blend of smoky sensousness and raw emotion. She has excellent control over her voice and her talent really shines in songs like "You're Not From Here" and "Broken Vow", where she goes from soft, regret-laden to uplifting higher pitches. And what's really surprising is that she pens her own songs as well. I believe she described herself as a "songbird with a voice", and I wholly agree. But, really, this isn't a review about Lara's voice alone. Her album, although I have fallen in love with it now, didn't quite do "it" for me the first time I listened through the entire CD. Certain songs require a second or third play for it to really sink in and take your breath away (e.g. "Till I Get Over You" and "Yeliel"). But then again, isn't this true of many music albums? Nevertheless, even though I recently bought three new CDs (Celine Dion's "A Decade of Song" being one of them), I still find myself popping Lara Fabian's album into the CD-player, anticipating that rush that accompanies some of her more powerful songs.
Free Music Review: The "New" Céline Dion Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, I'll say, this Cd continues where Céline left off. I bought the original release of Lara's self-titled Cd in December of 99. I was amazed at how good this young woman's voice was. She has a good range vocally, and she has that sentimental value about her. All the tracks are great. "Adagio" has to be the best, though, because of her suspenseful approach to a climax. I appreciate the fact she wrote her own music. There are so few talented singers whom actually write their own music."I will love again" was the song of last summer, then quickly turned into a fanatastic remix. The video only came out a couple of months ago. This track sets the mood altogether different. The mood changes fast, as the end of the Cd is very quiet. "I will love again" is one of the two really moving tracks on the disc. The other fast track is "Til I get over you". "Lara Fabian" is a Cd for those nights where you want to cuddle up in front of a fire with a glass of wine. I recommend you buy this CD for someone special on Valentine's day. Lara doesn't get carried away vocally, considering the choice of songs written for such an album. I don't find the album commercial. Rather more artistic in a classic way. The only drawback to the Cd is track 2, "Givn' up on you". It's refrain is very repetitive. We're treated to an Italian version of "Adagio", as the closing track. It's just slightly less deep, vocal wise. The english version has that strength and power to blow you away I mentioned that I bought the original version. There's no difference in the two versions, but the Cd jacket is changed. I prefer the new cover to the old one. I always preferred the cosmetic side of things! I'm just plain old fussy. So, if you like Céline style music, buy this great love Cd. It's worth the money. Did my review help you?
Free Music Review: Nothing Short of Astonishing! It's ALL about Lara Fabian! Hit: 5 Stars
I had never seen, heard or heard of Lara Fabian, until late one night I saw a TV commercial for her CD. She sang all of 10 seconds, and I almost passed out. The next day I went out and bought it first thing. It has yet to leave my CD player. For someone who considers herself "a songwriter with a voice" and not a DIVA, she has the most remarkable instrument to come along in recent memory. If you like singers, you will be in awe of Lara Fabian. The comparisons between her and Celine Dion will abound (Personally I find Celine horribly annoying) but Lara's control, musicality, and amazing resonance blow Celine away. For example at the end of "To Love Again (Si Tu M'Aimes)" the overtone series (a musical phenomenon that happens when there is a perfect marriage of pitch and resonance causing notes to produce additional notes which produce additional notes, and so on...) rings so loudly that you can't tell which note she's actually singing. This sort of phenomenon is practically NEVER heard on a recording, let alone by a pop singer, one would be more likely to hear it at the opera house. Her skills as a songwriter are sure to only get better, and pared with some of the best producers in the business; Patrick Leonard (Madonna), Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey, Luther Vandross), Mark Taylor (Cher), she gives us a CD that only gets better with every listen. My personal favorite tracks are "Broken Vow" a wonderful combination of honest emotion, simple vocals, and melody; "You're Not From Here" a hauntingly beautiful song; the club hit "I Will Love Again"; and the UNBELIEVEABLE "Adagio" which she sings in English AND Italian. Tommy Mottola made a great decision when signing her. This is a must for anyone who loves great singers and great songs. Just think, this is only her FIRST english album!! WOW!
