Free Music Review: The Essence of Laura
Hit: 4 Stars

Fresh off her 2004 Latin-Grammy winning album "Resta in Ascolto", Laura Pausini managed to surprise fans yet again when she released an album full of covers of Italian pop songs. Entitled "Io Canto" (I Sing), the record doesn't contain a single Pausini-written track, but it doesn't seem to matter. Though she's singing the words of others, this album screams the essence of Laura's career: touching ballads, infectious anthems, and brilliant vocals.

By far, the most memorable song is the title track, 'Io Canto'. Quite a departure from the in-your-face pieces found on "Resta in Ascolto", this one is an anthemic look at the beauty of the world. 'Destinazione Paradiso' is a subdued, cinematic ballad, as is 'Il Mio Canto Libero', a duet with Juanes. Among the more uplifting pieces are 'Stella Gemella' and 'Spaccacuore', which would preview the type of music found on 2008 album "Primavera in Anticipo". 'La Mia Banda Suona il Rock' is a Latin-infused piece filled with Caribbean beats, while 'Non Me lo So Spiegare', a duet with original artist Tiziano Ferro, is dark yet delicate.

Overall, "Io Canto" is an album full of different types of music, highlighting the different aspects of both Pausini's career and personality - dark, delicate ballads and anthemic rock pieces. It's a combination that seems to work, and makes the record shine.

Free Music Review: Io Canto: not a masterpiece, but a nice album
Hit: 4 Stars

I'll make no secret of it: I love Laura Pausini. I own most of her albums. My favorite is Resta in Ascolto. Io Canto is a collection of songs Laura admires, from artists such as Zucchero, Riccardo Cocciante, Claudio Baglioni and Biagio Antonacci. Although certainly not a masterpiece (and pretty boring at times), Io Canto has its moments, like "Come il sole all'improvviso", and "Il mio canto libero", a duet with Juanes. These two tracks alone may be worth the price of the CD. But if you are looking for an absolutely fantastic female album, I recommend instead El Amor es un Fantasma, by Shery. If you happen to like organic, inspired love songs, you'll fall in love with this debuting beauty, who in my humble opinion sings with the most romantic and lovely voice ever heard on Earth - and beyond.

Free Music Review: Disappointed
Hit: 3 Stars

Have only heard Laura's music on the radio, and decided to purchase this CD based on hearing the title track, Io Canto. I was disappointed to find out that it goes steadily downhill from there: no other track has the same energy or innovative sound, but kind of slows down to a generic soft rock-type mush. Wish the sound clips were available for this one on Amazon; I'd have saved my $13.99.
