Free Music Notes for Lj Plays the Beatles

Free Music Review: Stunning...
Hit: 5 Stars

I was 12 years old when John Lennon was murdered. I was a little sad, having listened to Beatles records on the phonograph as a small boy. But I didn't really grasp the cultural significance of John's death, nor did I understand the irony. Specifically, John had been photographed, just hours before his demise, in front of The Dakota giving Mark David Chapman (his soon-to-be executioner) an autograph. I went on to read "Lennon" by Coleman, "The Lives of John Lennon" by Goldman, Jann Wenner's "Lennon Remembers" and even John & Yoko's "Playboy Interview" in later years. Clearly, John was not a perfect human being. But his heart was in the right place when he sang "All You Need Is Love". How ironic it was that he would donate a piece of his time to the man who would ultimately kill him. How ironic that the man who spent the latter part of his life trying to conquer his own anger, and his own tendency toward violence, the man who sang (to himself as much as anyone) "Give Peace A Chance" was gunned down in front of his own home...

I was at Beatlefest in Chicago a few years ago and had the pleasure of hearing Laurence Juber play an emotional rendition of "Strawberry Fields Forever". There were perhaps 300 people in the room at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare, and we all stood there, for just a brief moment, in stunned silence. And during that moment I almost felt that John's spirit was there in the room, using Laurence as a conduit. It was THAT tangible. It then occurred to me that there must be something within all of us that transcends the material world, something that endures even as the body fails us. John left us a tremendous musical legacy that should never be forgotten. Laurence Juber paid homage to that legacy by putting his heart and soul into these renditions, and it was a profound experience. I don't know that buying this CD will give you the same feeling I had seeing it live, but it's definitely worth a try if you can afford it.

Free Music Review: An amazing artist
Hit: 5 Stars

I had the privilege of seeing Laurence Juber in concert earlier this year, in a small, intimate setting. Prior to that evening, I only knew his name through his brief tenure with WINGS. While I have always been a Beatles/Paul McCartney fan, Mr. Juber's name was only that - a name in some liner notes.

After hearing the 1st selection, I had to sit up and take notice. Here was someone who was not simply a competent player, but an artist. Both the Beatles selections I heard that night (which are featured on this album), as well as his original compositions, kept my wife and I mesmerized throughout his entire set.

Some other reviewers have said that Mr. Juber sounds like more than one guitarist on certain selections. It's true. I watched him play some of these arrangements, and I still don't know how he did it....but it was just LJ and his guitar - there was no overdubbing or accompaniment of any kind. He is an amazing artist, and this album is a must have for any lover of the Beatles or the guitar in general. Bravo, Mr. Juber.

Free Music Review: Excellent and then some.
Hit: 5 Stars

As many of us are, I am a long time and never ending admirer of the Beatles and all they encompassed. Over the years I've taken interest in various tributes, variations etc. of their music and usually am disappointed. Somehow I missed this one and stumbled onto it recently. Halfway through the second track I knew I found one of those great albums that will always stay above the surface. There's too much to go into here...all I can say is I can't imagine anyone past the entry level Beatles fan not enjoying this. Juber has pulled off a great and rare thing here, making tribute to the music we all know and love like a lifelong, irreplaceable best friend, while displaying his inventive arrangement skills and breathtaking talent as a guitarist. There's some twists and turns and depth to challenge us but he's not out to lose us and forget what brought us all here in the first place. Beyond that, or I guess in addition, it's simply an acoustic guitar daydream, perfectly produced. Impressive stuff to put it mildly. I just wish I'd found it a few years earlier...

Free Music Review: Guitar Great Plays Beatles' Best!
Hit: 5 Stars

If you have never heard Laurence Juber play guitar give yourself a treat and buy this disk.

This guy is truly one of rock's greatest guitar players of all time -- I guess that's why Paul McCartney chose him to be the lead guitar player for Wings -- and on this disk, Juber, playing acoustic guitar, gives new life to many Beatle favorites.

Somehow he makes one guitar sound like an entire band and more than once, after listening to a cut, my wife and I have looked at each other and said, "How did he do that?" His playing will blow you away. We have seen him live twice and he holds his own with Clapton and Hendrix both who I also saw twice.

This is also a disk that the entire family can enjoy. My wife and I are Baby Boomers who grew up with the Beatles but our 10 year old son likes this disk too. It is now the first disk we play when we sit down for dinner; both as a family and when we entertain.

Pick this one up. I'm sure after you give it a listen, you will be grabbing Juber's other disks too.

Free Music Review: a mixed segovia-mc cartney: laurence JUBER
Hit: 5 Stars

once I was asked, WHO is laurence juber - never heard of him! (and I was questioned by a cello-playing member of a chambre orchestra.) but because this E-music-workaholic already had heard the name BEATLES, I recommended laurence juber's solo guitar arrangements of beatle songs. with rising interest the motivation to listen to a modern artist grew stronger - after I had explained, a guitar is an instrument, similar a cello, only more tiny and held mostly in a horizontal position; position. this instrument should be well known by insider-circles as GUITARRA and bound to this scene are names like andres segovia (spain), django reinhardt (france), marc knopfler (great britain) and chet atkins (early elvis'rockabilly stylist, USA). now the juber-cd is on an endless going round and round on the CD-player of the mozart-brahms-bach-admirer - and that's the honour of: the beatles-cd of laurence juber, so: highly recommendable!
