Free Music Notes for Live In New YorkFree Music Review: Sept. 11 in perspective Hit: 5 Stars
What a haunting and beautiful piece of work this is. It's music from Laurie's last studio album mixed with some of her "greatest hits," but it's the time and place that really give this double cd its power. Recorded just days after the Sept. 11 tracks and at Town Hall, you can hear the emotion in her voice. And the bravery of pulling out such difficult tracks as "O Superman" and "Let x=x" with their chilling, prophetic lines about crashing planes and burning buildings. From anyone else this would have seemed like sacrilege and a horrible misstep to capitalize on the moment, but in Laurie Anderson's hands they are soothing, healing balm. Bless you for this, Laurie. It truly is the definitive memorial for the living and the dead.
Free Music Review: Haunting and Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
Even if it didn't have so many extra layers of resonance, given the post-Sept. 11 setting in New York, this would still be one of the most gorgeous and haunting releases in recent memory. The old and new material blend perfectly and gain extra immediacy and depth from their arrangement for this excellent four-person band. Buy it, turn down the lights, turn up the volume, and enter a unique musical (and lyrical) world.

A maximum of 1,000 words is not enough to do justice to one of the most glorious artists of our time.
Free Music Review: disappointed by Life on a String? check this out... Hit: 4 Stars
After waiting many years between Bright Red and Life on a String, I confess to being somewhat disappointed with the latter. Maybe I like Eno's production more than Willner's. One of the things which bugged me was that line from "Statue of Liberty": "Freedom is a scary thing. Not many people really want it." Isn't that glib, I thought? Laurie, why don't you tell that to all of the hundreds of Middle Eastern "detainees" of John Ashcroft? Ah, but Life on a String was recorded pre-9-11, I would guess. So I was surprised to hear on this live album the altered line: "Freedom is a scary thing. So precious. So easy to lose." And I have also heard that Anderson has lent her signature to a petition of artists protesting the Patriot Act. So, more power to you, Laurie. I was afraid I wouldn't like this recording, because songs from Life on a String are represented rather heavily. However, I think the versions here are better than the originals. The line "I feel like I am in a burning building" (from Let X=X) definitely takes on a new meaning now...
