Free Music Review: Led Zeppelin at it's best...Rock at it's best

Led Zeppelin is definitely one of the best bands on earth. They of course had a huge amount of fans. They have provided the fans with many great albums with some of the best rock songs ever, but something was missing from the fans Zeppelin album collection. A good live album. There were live albums, but they weren't a very good portrait of those huge Led Zeppelin concerts. Recently, Jimmy Page found some unreleased concert footage from the LA forum and Long Beach arena. This showed a Zeppelin concert at its peak.

Disc one:

LA Drone
I don't know why they put this on here. Fourteen seconds of the crowd cheering and some drone from the guitars.

Immigrant Song
Wow. This was the best way to start off the album. This is one of Zeppelin's more powerful songs, and boy does it sound awesome in concert. It is loud as hell and very powerful. They even add a guitar solo from Jimi. Right when you hear this song, you know the rest of the album is going to rock. The only flaw is that the AaaaaaaaaeeeeaaaaaahhhAH! at the beginning isn't as good as the studio, but besides that, this song is much better live.

Heartbraker
Another one of Zeppelins powerful, hard rocking songs. This song has one of the best intros of all time, and it sounds even better live!

Black Dog
This was never one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. I didn't like how it kept starting and stopping. But when they play it live, boy does it rock! It is much wilder live.

Over the Hills and Far Away
One of Led Zeppelins best acoustic songs. My personal favorite Zeppelin song, it sounds not too great on the album. But it really rocks live.

Since I've been loving you
A song that needs no improvement, and sounds the same live as in studio. Great song anyway!

Stairway to Heaven
The most famous Led Zeppelin song of them all. This song sounds different live, as Jimi changes the acoustic intro a little bit (adds a few slides and higher notes). And he adds more to the solo. This song really shows how great Led Zeppelin is, when this complicated song sounds so good live.

Going to California/That's the way
Great acoustic songs

Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
This is a very good folksy countryish song. The crowd during this is keeping the beat with a clap. Like in most concerts, the crowd isn't keeping the beat too well, but Zeppelin still makes this song sound good.


Disc Two:

Dazed and Confused
Wow was this one long! In this long song, you really don't feel and hear the power and might of Led Zeppelin you get with the other songs. Possibly because its so long. When I first saw the back and it said this song was 25 minutes long I was excited, "Ooh boy, a longer guitar solo!" But then I realized that probably also meant "A :ugh: longer bow solo." Lucky me, the bow solo was actually about the same lenght I think. To make sure fans didn't lose interest, this song was a medley, featuring the songs walters walk and the crunge. Walters walk was a quiet guitar solo, which soon turned into the Crunge, a classic rock n roll sounding song. It ended with the great Dazed and Confused solo.

What is and what should never be
the studio recording of this song always bothered me. Just the beginning did, where his voice sounded like it was being amplified through a Leslie Organ amplifier. This isn't in the live version though. This is a good Queen-esque song.

Dancing Days
this song sounds much better live

Moby Dick
Wow! Bonham is a teriffic drummer. This has about a 17 minute drum solo, where it keeps on going. You would think that 17 minutes of nothing but drums would bore you, but with John Bonham, it is fun and exciting. Want a clue how good this solo is? According to songfacts.com, when Bonham played this live, he would beat the drums so hard his hands would bleed.

Disc 3
Whole Lotta Love
This is a really good Led Zeppelin song. When played live, it is 20 minutes, and it contains classic rock n roll songs Boogie Chillun, Lets have a Party, and Hello Marylou, and the blues song Going Down Slow. Then it goes back to whole lotta love. Its a really good song.

Rock and Roll
This is a really good, powerful mightly Led Zeppelin song, and it sounds great live, as do all other powerful mighty led zeppelin songs. the same goes for ...

The Ocean
another terrific mighty song.

Zeppelin's best blues rock song


my overall rating of this is 10 out of 10. This is a definite must for any Led Zeppelin fan, or any 70s rock fan. You haven't heard Led Zeppelin until you've heard them live.

For a band with such an overarching legacy, the official record of Led Zeppelin's legendary--and unpredictable--live act has heretofore been poorly represented by the disappointing, scattershot soundtrack to The Song Remains the Same. But this triple-disc live set (culled from 1972 Long Beach/LA shows in advance of Houses of the Holy) addresses history with a vengeance, if a few decades late. These shows have rightfully assumed cult status in the bootleg market, showcasing a band at the peak of its creative and performing powers. Zep faithful will welcome the belated release as evidence for enduring loyalty, but younger fans may find its diversity and dynamics even more enlightening--indeed, whole careers have since been built on the musical ideas Jimmy Page and company toss off here as decorative filler. Crucially rooted in the amped-and-hammered American blues of the guitarist's former band, the Yardbirds, the marathon workouts of "Dazed and Confused" and "Whole Lotta Love" (which consume nearly an hour all by themselves) somehow encompass Ricky Nelson, Morocco, James Brown, Holst, Elvis Presley, and Muddy Waters amidst their trademark sturm und drang, while the acoustic set that closes out disc one showcases the band's--and particularly Robert Plant's--good-natured, crypto-Celtic folk appeal with energetic aplomb. Bigger and brasher than just about any rock act that followed in its historic wake, yet ever fan-loyal to its myriad influences, Led Zeppelin's live juggernaut finally gets the monument it deserves. --Jerry McCulley
