Free Music Review: a pastry-shop full of music...take your pick...
Hit: 5 Stars

short review: standout tracks: i can say i liked allsongs, all cds...however in the following order 1st, 3rd, and 2nd cd. a great mix of folk and rock throughout.

long review: A dronin, internationally folkish, blue grassy, funky swingin, rockabilly, blues drenched, hoedownish, salsero rockero, techno-loungin, bach-ified, rockin-stompin, rollin fest. Nice rhythm section too...a foot that plays like fingers, fingers that play like feet...a guitar that sings, and a voice that bends like guitar strings...

Singer is in a concise & controlled yet ecstatic & rappin mode throughout(no lemon advertisements thk goodness, just bluesy moanin)....he's great on the folksy songs. The lead guitarist is sloppy... but what a sloppiness. He likes to solo all over the place. Makes the history of guitar playin, ala townsend(who i like very much ala liveleeds), look smooth as a silken motor-machine....but this zep page of history is made of sheep's wool & strong leather on the outside, with a wrinkled cotton-linen shirt on the inside...and chamois-blue suede shoes on the feats....which aint all that bad is it? a contemporary-celtic-saxon-spanish-baroque-bluesman to say the least...

I thought the grateful dead were eclectic...i have heard other zep live stuff but this is so deep of a package. You get a nice blend of all styles. Personally i like listening to the music as is...without any video to distract from it. The audio experience lets the music speak for itself...just like listening to any album for the first time.

...check out the samples first if your hesitant...at amazon & the [internet site]they are the same.

cheers zep for a job well done...then and now...you got nothin to prove in my book...for now at least...

Free Music Review: Incredible live Led Zeppelin recording
Hit: 5 Stars

First of all, How the West Was Won (HWWW) is an incredible live Led Zeppelin recording, but not without its faults. That said, it's a must have for any Led Zeppelin fan.

A comparison with Song Remains the Same (SRS) seems to be the best approach for this review. Both were recorded at more or less the same time (approximately the time of the release of Houses of the Holy), so neither album includes material from Physical Graffiti. Both include a 26 minute Dazed and Confused, plus lengthy versions of Whole Lotta Love and Moby Dick. I prefer the SRS Dazed and Confused and the HWWW Whole Lotta Love. As for Moby Dick, the only thing worse than a 13 minute long Moby Dick (SRS) is a 19 minute long Moby Dick (HWWW). Fortunately, in the CD-age, skipping to the next song is much easier than when listening to record albums.

The real gems on this recording are those songs that are not included on SRS, such as Heartbreaker and a number of songs from the "new album" Houses of the Holy. Perhaps because the material is newer, Led Zep did not alter the original versions as much as they did on the previously mentioned tracks. Over the Hills and Far Away, Dancing Days, The Ocean are all excellent and, when combined with Song Remains the Same, Rain Song and No Quarter from SRS, fans can enjoy live versions of most of the best of Houses of the Holy.

For fans of the song Stairway to Heaven (it's not my favorite Zep song), the version included on HWWW is superior to that on SRS.

Finally, the sound quality on this CD is excellent.

In short, this CD somehow seems to encapsulate the overall experience of a Led Zep concert better than SRS does. Led Zep should have released this recording years ago, but better late than never.

Free Music Review: A LIVE CLASSIC
Hit: 5 Stars

The Who had LIVE AT LEEDS and The Stones had GET YER YA YA'S OUT. LED ZEPPELIN has released the ultimate live recording, HOW THE WEST WAS WON. The three disc set starts with LA DRONE and 14 seconds later IMMIGRANT SONG blasts from the speakers followed immediately by HEARTBREAKER and BLACK DOG. ROBERT PLANT introduces OVER THE HILL AND FAR AWAY and PAGE begins to play the delicate beginnings of the song. JOHN BONHAM'S drums have never sounded more powerful and lift each song to another level. SINCE I'VE BEEN LOVING sounds strong but the real highlights on disc one(in my opinion)are STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN and GOING TO CALIFORNIA. Disc one closes with THAT'S THE WAY and BROY-YR-AUR STOMP. Disc two starts with A 25 minute version of DAZED AND CONFUSED and then into excellent versions of WHAT IS AND WHAT SHOULD NEVER BE and DANCING DAYS. Disc 2 closes with a 19 minute version of MOBY DICK with JOHN BONHAM in top form. JOHN BONHAM'S drum sound like thunder throughout the three disc set. Disc 3 begins with WHOLE LOTTA LOVE and then into ROCK AND ROLL and THE OCEAM. BRING IT ON HOME closes disc 3. The music sounds great, the musicianship is top notch with PLANT and PAGE in great form. JOHN PAUL JONES is an excellent musician as well and adds mandolin, keyboards and bass to the mix. I heard JIMMY PAGE live in 1977 with LED ZEPPELIN and again in 1986 with THE FIRM. Hearing his guitar on the three disc set brought back memories of those concerts I saw in Oklahoma City. My only complaint is the packaging. There is no booklet and no photos, just a brief statement from JIMMY PAGE about HOW THE WEST WAS WON. I highly recommend this
three CD set. I will be purchasing the DVD in the very near future.

Free Music Review: WHERE WAS THIS THING WHEN I WAS 15?
Hit: 5 Stars

I constantly needed ZEP fuel at that age, and to think that these recordings were just floating around somewhere, unavailable to me! DAMN! Meanwhile I was wasting my time with WALKING INTO CLARKSDALE (remember that heef?) trying to satisfy the ZEPPELIN addiction. Ok, CLARKSDALE wasn't terrible, I got to see PAGE AND PLANT perform live for that album, and it of course was incredible! But I had already spun all the ZEPPELIN I could find. CHRIST, they hadn't even released BBC SESSIONS yet. How was I supposed to talk to hot chicks without some ZEP pounding into my headphones and possessing me with those insane hormones unknown to me ever since? SONG REMAINS THE SAME? Forget it. That stuff was weak, well at least not what I needed.
Now, seven years later they've delivered HOW THE WEST WAS WON. My cousin Joe took some time to come around to ZEPPELIN. He's still rather new, and this is one of the first albums he purchased. I was listening to it in his car and was ROCKING! "We gotta go find some HOT chicks!" I screamed over the heavy volume half of disc one.
If you are familiar with SONG REMAINS.. you can expect to find almost the same formula on the second two discs... A lengthy DAZED, a medly of blues WHOLE LOTTA LOVE. But the stuff does have its own identity here, which it certainly didn't have on SONG REMAINS. The former was released in the seventies and was for the teens of the day to put on while remeniscing about the killer ZEPPELIN shows they may have seen. Nowadays teens have to use their imaginations a bit, and well, this set will send them soaring! Very colorful, and much recommended for anyone whos between the ages of 14-18. (Also recommended for ANYONE else who wants to ROCK!)

Free Music Review: We Finally get a great version. Excellent Remastering
Hit: 5 Stars

After several attempts at re-releasing vintage Zep, Jimmy Page found this material from two seperate 1972 concerts in California. These were done very very well. The digital remastering is done so well that you feel that you really are on the stage.

How can you argue with a 25 min. + version of Dazed and Confused with a deep bass sound that shakes the rafters with no interference at all. A nearly 10 minute version of Stairway. A 23 minute version of Whole Lotta Love, and so much more.

It's nice that you can finally crank Led Zeppelin as loud as it's supposed to be played, without wanting to jab an icepick in your ear from the interference and the bad transfers. This doesn't exist on this issueance of classic Zeppelin.

You can really hear the subtelties of Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones' awesome playing styles. Their playing is among the best ever. Unfortunately with the past attempts to bring it back, a lot of the artistry of their playing has been lost due to the bad transfers that were brought to us with previous releases.

One of the greatest Rock N Roll bands of all time has finally gotten the treatment that they so richly deserve. People of this generation, who weren't lucky enough to hear them originally, can finally get to listen to some of the greatest songs in the genre of hard rock.

So, in the end I say this. If you know people this age who like groups like Creed, Nickleback, and all BUY THIS THREE DISC SET NOW. You will not be dissappointed. Your friends will also love you for this. Just sit back and enjoy unadulterated, digitally remastered masterpieces that are finally brought out for us to enjoy.
